Broncos and Steelers Sunday Night

The Denver Broncos are not favored by most betting gurus for Sunday's game, but I think they could be wrong. Last year the Steelers beat Denver on Monday Night Football, and the Broncos will want to get back on them for that.

Also, McDaniels is using the starters for the first 3 quarters, so the game should go well if Orton is in there for all 3 (often stuff they say gets changed).

The game is much more important to Denver than it is to Pittsburgh since Denver has not won a pre-season game yet.

Tebow is coming in late in the game (so they are telling everyone) and of course, he will liven up the crowd and probably will do great things, even if he ends up in several body casts.

The Steelers have a problem with a lot of injuries in the secondary which should give the Broncos the advantage.

So my personal prediction is Broncos +3

Orton is executing very well this season, and teammates agree he is the guy

Have you noticed how Kyle Orton has been executing plays like a machine? He did that last year and won the first 6 games. Of course, we all hoped the trend would continue, and now we are hoping for the "machine" to keep up the excellent mechanics for the regular season just a few weeks away.

Orton is actually much improved this season. This guy has something to prove, and I like him more and more because of what he is doing. He has been sidestepped during the off season for the likes of Brady Quinn and Tim Tebow, but did he let that bother him? Heck no he didn't, and in fact he buckled down and worked that much harder.

I am seeing some character here that I did not know existed last year. Orton has worked hard enough and demonstrated the team player mentality to the point that McDaniels has praised him in public over and above the other QBs. I heard an interview with McDaniels Friday on the radio where he made the statement that Orton has improved significantly over last year.

Now when the regular season begins, Orton will presumably be in the game all day long, barring injuries of course. If he can take this methodology to the W column, he will become the hero of Denver. The fans want to win, and if the team wins, the fans will be cheering the guys who did it.

I like Orton in this new season more than I ever thought I would, but after seeing the other QBs on the job, it is evident who has totally memorized the playbook and the execution. It does not matter if Denver wins any of these pre-season games. What matters is how the score looks during the regular 16 games of the season.

Orton has completed 69% of his passes so far in the pre-season. "You can see the difference in him," wide receiver Eddie Royal said after a 25-20 loss to the Detroit Lions on Saturday night. "He's pointing out things for the linemen and pointing out things for us. He can read the coverage better."

"It's like night and day for him this year to last year," said Jabar Gaffney, who's developed quite a rapport with Orton. "He's getting us in the right play, getting us to the line fast, seeing what the defence is doing and getting us in situations that will result in a successful play."

With public praise from the head coach, and with the new contract Orton has secured, he is in the bestpossible position to become a champion this year. I sincerely hope he makes it big time. Fans will be very happy with a 10 and 6 season, but they want better.

Orton might just be able to deliver on it!

Kyle Orton Gets the Contract Nod

(ed Jacobsohn/Getty Images)

Isn't it amazing at the Denver Broncos? Just when you are sure they have lost their minds and tossed all reason to the 4 winds, they do a good thing. Orton got a very nice contract extension through the 2011 season with 8.8 million attached. Well, that should take the worry off his shoulders I would say. This new contract gives Kyle 3 years.

So there is no question he deserves the nod. He knows the playbook very well. He executes very well, and he does not allow anything to deter him from doing his job. God knows there have been many a distraction coming his way this year. So now that the news of such great confidence has been released, what will they be doing with those other guys?

Tebow, who also got a great contract, could be sitting on the bench for the next 2 or 3 years if Orton performs well. You know he plans on doing exactly that. Tebow might have to be a real good sport for a long time. Other QBs have had to take this route of being in the shadow of a more mature starter for up to 3 years like Phillip Rivers and Aaron Rodgers.

Of course, the other thing that totally confused me was the drafting of Brady Quinn. Why not just keep Tom Brandstater? I know, I know. I have always been his big believer and fan, but he is gone so why even ask the question? So, if Brady is number 3, how long do ya think he will be sitting there? Well, I guess he wants a paycheck so it might be a good long time.

As the season progresses we will be getting a better understanding of when and if McDaniels will bring in Tebow or Quinn. Maybe injuries will cause that to happen, but of course we never hope for them to happen. They just do happen.

Anyway, Orton will not get that money until next year. He still has to exist on the paltry 2.6 million he got earlier as a restricted free agent. Then the higher numbers come in to play after this season is over and the 2011 season begins. I do not believe he will let the 5.5 million guarantee cause him to be distracted do you?

More Injuries including Tim Tebow's Ribs

What a mess this is getting to be. Everyone is injured or healing. He missed practice yesterday and is out today completely, apparently healing from a rib injury sustained last Sunday in the game when he ran in a touchdown. I hope they are talking to him about that stuff.

McDaniels will have a press conference later today to update his status, but it is doubtful he will be in the game against Detroit this Sunday. On Tuesday he was seen at practice wearing a protective flak jacket to protect his ribs, but he did practice that day. Apparently it is getting worse since he was obviously holding it as he left the field.

He was hit by linebacker Abdul Hodge of the Bengals during his touchdown run last Sunday, and if you watched that run, you can easily imagine a rib injury from it. Tebow takes the hits, but heck why not hold off on that stuff awhile and get to the regular season? Makes sense to me.

At least we know he is human.

Denver Bronco Executive Commander Office Chair

Get yourself a real good office chair that is tough, durable and always comfortable. Hey, I have an idea. How about the Denver Broncos Office Executive Commander Chair? Always a good fit for any great office. I have mine!

Denver Bronco Commander Executive Office Chair
Just keep in mind that if you place this chair in your office, and you are at a function or out of town, someone in the office will come over to "borrow" it in a clandestine manner. Happens every time and you have to chain it down, or lock it in the closet. How about closed circuit TV? Always a good idea if you are the boss.

After you order your new chair, have a read on this article about the performance of Tim Tebow Sunday evening. Always love the Bleacher reports.

Loss to the Bengals means nothing - Tebow looked good, and Orton even better!

Not too much to say today, except that I am kinda happy about Kyle Orton being the professional QB on the field, and getting the credit from McD for it.

Tebow did exactly what I said he would do. He worked hard, and he ran with the ball. He even ran a touchdown in. Amazing isn't he?

I am waiting for the first home game where I will be sitting in the north end zone area taking it all in. Wondering how we will do against Seattle.

The team looked good, and Royal was a fireball. Overall, I am impressed at the first outing. Still, there were some defensive blunders which I did not expect. Guys reaching out kinda "toward the ball carrier" but not quite getting there. That will be corrected.

McDaniels will be sitting in the video room, with them guys, narrating the action and stopping it when he wants to put a guy on the spot. Several need to be smitten a bit. That is ok. There was a lot of real team spirit and the guys all seem to be a unit.

We are looking for those "intangibles" aren't we? Every Sunday from here on out, the world is back in it's correct alignment and the NFL is underway. Sure is good

Today is Game Day - Preseason in Cincinnati - Tebow is the Focus of the Media

Denver Broncos QB Tim Tebow (15) warms up before the afternoon practice AUGUST 11, 2010 at Dove Valley. (John Leyba, The Denver Post)

During the preseason is the time we usually get a look at the backup QBs. Last year we saw Tom Brandstater take the field and do some great things, then we saw him no more. This year the focus will be on the team's number one draft pick, Tim Tebow.

Unlike Brandstater, Tebow will be showing up again and again. It is in the cards. Some other team will develop Brandstater, and he will become an excellent QB in the NFL.

Meantime I want to predict a mostly passing offense from the Broncos today. They have too many running backs on the injured reserve, or as some call it these days, "the hobble". Lots of members in that club.

Watch for one guy to run the ball when receivers are covered - Tim Tebow. Also, I predict the tough defense to step up and hit hard against the Bengals offense today. Without Dumervil there may be few to no sacks, but still I am saying Broncos by 3 today.

Bronco Game this Sunday - Tebow Leading Off

Here comes our first look at Tim Tebow in action on the field, leading the team as the quarterback. Get ready for it, as I believe we may see some fun and exciting play from the rookie.

Lee Corso believes Tebow will become the starter much sooner than generally expected. I am not one of those who is in disbelief of course, but many are.

Read this story in USA Today
"I think Tebow, by the sixth game, will be the quarterback. It will take some time for him to get in do a few things, make a mistake or two and learn from his mistakes. I think he's going to be a good quarterback."

Yahoo Sports is reporting the opinion that Dumervil may be ready to enter the fray by the end of the season, if all goes well with the surgery and rehab. Read the story here.

Limping along through training camp, losing players

This is a terrible beginning of any training camp, or season. The controversial Broncos are in bad shape at this time due to the loss of Elvis Dumervil who has a torn pectoral muscle, and will be out for 5 months after surgery (most likely scenario).

Jarvis Moss has broken his right hand, meaning he will be out for several weeks too, and suddenly the Broncos may have to change their defensive plan from 3-4 to 4-3. Of course they have not said it yet, but we fans know the 3-4 lineup depends on a top rushing linebacker to make the sacks fast.

Right guard Chris Kuper injured his ankle, and their brand new tailback LenDale White has a leg injury from Friday. He lasted what? One day?

Now what do you think they will do?

Earlier left tackle Ryan Clady injured a knee playing basketball. Special teams star Darrell Reid had radical knee surgery in the spring (hope I am remembering that correctly). Gads the team is in trouble and they haven't played the first game yet.

I have tickets for the game with Seattle on the 19th of September, but now I wish I had picked a later game. Well, maybe they can have Tim Tebow step in and play both offense and defense? Heck, why not? They are giving him lots of millions even before he ever takes his first snap in the NFL.

Still time to spend more money and find some players out there. From what I hear, there is quite a pool of old guys waiting for a miracle.

In a recent AP article Josh McDaniels said, "We didn't change our conditioning program from one year to the next, we didn't change the way we get ready for practice, we didn't change our stretching routines or anything like that," McDaniels said. "It's just sometimes I think those are freak things that happen. I think our job is just to manage them the best we can and handle them and move forward and try to keep getting better."

Meantime, on the lighter side, here is an article from the Bleacher Report about Tim Tebow's new haircut.

Opportunity Knocks Denver Fans - Saturday Free Night Practice Event

Come on down to Mile High Stadium on Saturday for a free training camp workout. Free to the public of course and probably will be interesting to see. This will actually be a night practice session, and there will be some other stuff going on. You should come on down fans. See below or click here for more information

The Denver Broncos will hold a training camp practice on Saturday, Aug. 7, at 6 p.m. at INVESCO Field at Mile High that is free and open to the public.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early to avoid delays entering the stadium as a large crowd is expected. Last year, the 13,402 fans who watched the Broncos' training camp practice at INVESCO Field at Mile High represented the largest practice attendance in franchise history.

"The stadium practice will be a great opportunity for the team and coaches to get re-acclimated with our stadium," Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. "We'll get a chance to run through all of the elements of a live game experience, including sideline communication and the setup of the coaches' booth. It also provides us the opportunity to have an energetic practice in front of our great fans, which always excites the players and the staff in training camp."

Below are some key points regarding the Broncos' INVESCO Field at Mile High practice on Saturday, Aug. 7:

  • The practice will run from 6-8 p.m., and gates to the stadium will be open at 5 p.m.
  • Admission and parking are free. Parking will be available in all lots adjacent to the stadium.
  • Entry to the stadium will be through Gate 4 and Gate 10. The standard stadium bag and prohibited item policy will be in place. Bags must be soft-sided and no larger than 12" x 12" x 12". Non-alcoholic beverages in plastic bottles that are still factory sealed are permitted through stadium gates.
  • Seating for the practice is general admission. Fans will be directed to the seating areas of the stadium that will be open.
  • The Broncos will practice in full pads, and the session will include several 'live' periods.
  • Following practice, former Bronco Floyd Little's induction speech for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2010 will be shown to fans on ThunderVision (main scoreboards).

Dumervil out for the season? Oh no, not that!

What else can go wrong around here? Now Dumervil finally has a good contract, and then gets an injury to his big chest muscle (pectoral) and recovery time is usually 4 or 5 months.

Can this really be happening?

Who else can the Broncos find to replace him for a season? I feel terrible about this after all my blogging about getting him a contract. Now the team has a problem, but I am sure they are scrambling to find a strategy.

Broncos sign LenDale White and Waived Kolby Smith

White is an old Denver area high school star, a power back previously with the Seattle Seahawks. The coach of the Seahawks released White recently, and his coach there was Pete Carrol, who was also his coach at USC.

White is going to serve a four game suspension for some kind of issue around a substance he tested positive for, but I do not know anything about what it was or any other details.

White is a good power back who also previously played with the Titans. He is fairly well regarded for his work in the NFL. Broncos must be worried about the Moreno injury to bring White in, but as I see it, serving 4 games off won't do the Broncos much good if Moreno is gone during any of those games.

Kolby Smith must not have impressed the team too much during his recent debut in camp, so off he goes in favor of White. Funny stuff happens around this team doesn't it?

So, White is a good player, and his attitude has been very positive and all that since his substance suspension was announced, but why did Denver get him exactly? Did they take a chance on a guy that needed a break?

Seems the popular opinion that they are concerned about Moreno being out for a time can't really be why they picked up White since he will not be playing the first 4 games. Maybe they got a good financial deal on him and couldn't pass it up for the depth.

Training Camp Attendance Breaks Records

Like I said before I knew training camp would be a big deal for many people. I always love to come, but this time it was more crowded than I have seen in 15 years or so.

Lots of normal stuff happened and it all comes down to training and drills, but the one thing different this time is Tebow. Tebow is one half QB and one half RB. He took off running with the ball tucked away several times.

Now this is only training camp, so is there any real reason for concern?

John Elway has endorsed Tebow for his character traits. He says Tebow has intangibles that are required of winners in the NFL, especially as QBs.

So shall we all be worried that Tim Tebow is going to be the biggest offensive yard gainer on the team? He is certainly a man of destiny here in Denver. He seems to fit right in and the other players seem to get on with him right well.

Should a QB also run the ball half the time? Will this change as time goes by? Or, is this the habit he will never be able to break? Time will tell.

Offensive lineman Quinn was looking very good in drills. He was stopping all comers like gangbusters. He will be a great asset this year. Offensive and Defensive line drills were very fun to watch, and obviously there is a lot of work to do,

Get ready for some football folks
