John Elway on KDVR 31 Says Tebow has Intangibles

Last night, and on a previous night I saw John Elway talking about the possibilities of what can be achieved this season with Tebow. We are all talking about Tebow's lack of NFL experience, but Elway is saying Tebow has leadership stuff, get it done stuff and other intangible qualities that the team needs.

John really likes the kid, and sees something we all hope is true. Elway said (paraphrased) that Tebow has the kind of drive and leadership needed to win games in tough situations. He called these qualities "intangibles".

I can't find the video of the bit I saw last night, but just to give you some history of what Elway is doing on Tebow's behalf, here are some good stories recently.

Dumervil gets 5 Year Contract Deal - $58 Million

Dumervil gets contract extention from the Broncos - I am not surprised by the announcement, but what is news is the reported amount of the new deal. Elvis is getting a big contract, with a $58.332 Million guarantee on top of his $3.168 million existing. This makes him the highest paid pass rusher in the NFL.

So his humble attitude and team loyalty have finally paid off, and the organization is recognizing his value. Darn good thing they got this done because the Broncos cannot afford to lose him.

He said recently, "Money is not everything, and that's the way I was brought up," said Dumervil, who grew up in the Little Haiti neighborhood of Miami. "It's nice when you get it, don't get me wrong, but I was always taught that you get what you put into it. And as long as you conduct yourself as such, good things will happen for you."

The new deal runs for 5 years, so Elvis is set and will be with us for a long time. Sure happy about that, and my theory of them running out of money for payroll was apparently incorrect.

Here comes Bronco Training Camp at Dove Valley

Training camp begins in just a few days. Rookies camp starts on July 26th, but as I understand it, we cannot attend that camp. On August 1st, when the full team starts official camp, then the fans can come on over and take it all in. The full camp is open to the public from August 1st - 18th, 2010. Come on down!

Here's a pic from last year of Tom Brandstater (good luck Tom) credit below
Rookie QB Tom Brandstater lets loose a long pass downfield caught by rookie tight end Marquez Branson on Tuesday. More photos. (The Denver Post | Joe Amon) - 2009

Unless you are a true football fanatic, training camp is likely to disappoint. Nothing but blood, sweat and tears (not too many tears except when dust gets in the eye). It is a tough training time and players are put through the paces with drills, exercises, runs and practice. It is a hard hitting affair not for the faint of heart.

For most fanatics who attend, there is a favorite subject person or team to watch. Many love to watch the receivers, but others love the offensive drills. Usually there are 2 sessions daily, so if the morning camp didn't suit you, there is always the afternoon, when it is hotter. Whew!

Makes me tired just thinking about watching it. But it is a lot of fun when you go with other friends who love the team. We are all skeptical about McDaniels this year, and just about everyone will be paying attention to the QBs and how they execute. For me, that is the most interesting part.

Tim Tebow now has his own shoe line, the NFL's most popular jersey and a spot on some dumb bachelor show. All this for a guy who has not yet achieved anything in the pros. Most of us remember other hot young players who have come to camp and could not get the gist of it all. I know Tim is an awesome guy, but is he an awesome QB?

Only time will tell. I know Orton will execute in camp like a machine. He has a lot to prove, and his job to hang onto. He has all the advantage at this point. He was in camp with McDaniels last year, while Quinn and Tebow are on the lower end of the curve.

I am also going to be paying a lot of attention to our new defensive line and how it will function and how the guys will be working together. They are the key to success this year. The big D must hold the opposing teams to under 100 yards in offense to win. That is a must!

A lot of fun, a lot of analysis and tons of laughs. Training camp is way more fun for the fans than for the players.

Where will Terrell Owens Land?

Everyone in sports is talking about this guy, Terrell Owens. He is not signed yet for the 2010 season. According to a recent NFL story, he has only himself to blame. He has been rejected by several teams so far as he goes about trying to sell his services somewhere.

Ryan Cook, who writes for several sports sites thinks maybe the Denver Broncos will be the next logical place for Terrell. Now normally I could just about say for certain that he would not get in here, but given this new coach and his unorthodox methods, who knows?

Owen's agent Drew Rosenhaus texted ESPN's Adam Schefter that he is "very confident" that Owens will have a new deal "within the next few weeks." I wonder if Denver is in the mix of maybe teams where T.O. can land a new home?

This could go all the way until the season begins before Terrell Owens gets a new contract. It might happen after someone gets injured in the pre-season or in the first 2 games. Does that make sense?

I have been a Bronco fan since 1973, but there is more. I have a picture too!

I got married the first time in 1973, and we were pretty broke and all we had to do was watch TV, so guess what we watched? The Waltons, and the Bronco Games!!

So, 1977 was exciting and fun, and I spilled a lot of stuff on the living room rug that year after the amazing trick plays and very exciting wins in the playoffs. After that, I was totally dedicated.

1998 - 1999 - 2000 were amazing to say the least. I have a picture of John Elway sitting on the vehicle in the victory parade, waving right into the camera, with the wife and kids right there with him. He had on some "terminator" style sunglasses that day, and he was riding high. My picture was taken by a local professional photographer who is also a friend, hence I got the picture.

Later I handed the pic to some friends who worked at Mile High Stadium and they talked John into signing it for me. I can hardly see the signature, and I have no way on earth of knowing if it is real, or if my friends faked it on his behalf, but it is one of my most prized possessions no matter what. I love that picture.

The Shanahan years were great overall, but that loss to Oakland in game 12 of the 2008 season may be the clincher that sent Bowlen through the roof, and the rest is history. Dang the day, I still want to go back and have the Broncos turn that game around. Did I really pray for that?

Anyway, today I sit here wondering if Josh McDaniels will last another year if the Broncos don't at least win 10 games, and/or get into the playoffs this season. I cannot get into the head of Pat Bowlen, but McDaniels has a 4 year contract and this is the 2nd year, so Bowlen might let it ride another year into 2011.

As I mentioned yesterday I believe the Defense holds to key to recovery. All they have to do is hold opposing teams under 100 yards of offense. The Broncos will win 99% of all games where the Defense does this, and I do think as undynamic as Orton is, he will execute plays correctly because he has a Big Something to prove to all Denver fans.

Orton is better at QB than Brady Quinn, but if Orton is injured, Quinn can step in right now. So Orton will start and then the QBs will line up behind him. I personally hope he does well, but mostly I hope the Defense can keep the other teams from scoring and getting offensive yards in each and every game. Without a great defense, Denver does not stand a chance of getting to 10 and 6, or better.

I am looking at my picture of John Elway. He is the hero of all time in Denver, and will be very hard to replace in this decade. Tebow? Yes I am nostalgic, and I am getting older and more grouchy, but still if this team does well I will absolutely give credit where it is due. So far, I am not impressed with this young coach. Sure hope I am wrong about him.

The Coming Season Depends on Defense - Here's Why

Last year the Broncos won 8, and they lost 8. There are some real pathetic analytical positions, but I believe it all comes down to the defense holding the opposing team to under 100 yards of offense. Numbers do not lie, and at this point, with all the controversy Josh McDaniels has kicked up with is disciplinary ways, only a numbers workup will suit me.

So last year when Denver won against good teams and mediocre teams, they always held them under 100 yards.

Denver beat Kansas City last year when KC only racked up 94 yards. Same deal with Oakland who racked up 95 yards. Playing these same teams later in the season and Denver lost against Kansas City when they achieved 317 offensive yards. The second game against Oakland was lost when the Raiders hit 241 yards. Defense made the difference, and rarely have I heard much said about those numbers lately.

Last year the Broncos won against New England when they held the Patriots to 94 yards of offense, but lost to Baltimore who gained 125 yards. In fact, Baltimore's offensive win was the least impressive of all the losses. Broncos gave up more yards to every other team who beat them after that first 6 games.

Pittsburgh (173 yards), Redskins (174 yards), San Diego (203 yards), Indianapolis (92 yards), Eagles (105 yards).

Now with all these numbers in your face, wouldn't you be taking the top draft picks to obtain great defensive players? Well, we did get Jamal Williams (hope he has a year or tow left of top performance), Justin Bannan and Jarvis Green. With Elvis Dumervil and D.J. Williams at linebacker, the D has a chance of being successful. We shall see how they gel together in the coming weeks.

Numbers do not lie. Defense can make the difference. A consistent offense is MANDATORY for wins. Will it be consistent? Will revolving QBs work? It all remains to be seen, but there is a chance McDaniels will come out ok on this, even though I believe he has done some dumb stuff to prove he is the boss. I hope Denver can hold their opponents to under 100 yards of offense and we could see a good season.

Denver Broncos - What can we say at this point?

Will someone tell me why Tebow's NFL jersey is the most popular and best selling in the nation for the last 2 quarters? Huh?

I know the world is changing and all that crap, but don't we still wait for guys to prove their moxy before we reward them? The fans from all across the country are buying Tim Tebow's jersey with only hype and media attention to guide them. Can anyone say "Duh"?

So what will happen next is just about anyone's guess. Elvis Dumervil still has no contract as far as I know. Not a lot of other guys have contracts at this point, but the important ones do. Why is Dumervil not important enough for the Broncos to offer him one?

Did Elvis frown once when McDaniels was having a meeting or something?

Surely the top Sacker in the NFL is not in the doghouse. Could it be somehow? The headmaster does require obedience and somehow if you even flinch, you could find yourself walking to the bus stop.

According to my best information, Dumervil has until July 29th to get that contract in writing, and my guess is they will try to shortchange him. Why do I say such a thing? Good grief, just review the way the management has conducted itself over the past year.

Everyone hold your breath right now! Don't breathe or move. Ok, now relax. Josh is in the next room and you are safe.

What has Brady Quinn got himself into here? So, Chris Simms is gone, and Brandstater is gone (too bad to toss such a talent, but he is better off somewhere else), and now it is the strangest QB deal ever. Who will start?

He is going to play Tebow in the August games for sure, but what about the regular season? Will they really keep him next to the Gatorade? I cannot imagine that. The first time Orton has a difficult time in converting a first down, here comes Tebow.

If Quinn can't get into the End Zone, here comes Tebow.

I predict that you will see the first of a new kind of strategy sort of like what they do in the MLB. They are going to use all the QBs in the first few regular season games. Orton will get the first down. and Quinn will get the next down, and Tebow will hop in for the last down.

I can just see McDaniels running out on the field to take his QB out of the game. Ha Ha, just like baseball. Think the officials will allow it?

How many timeouts do they get each quarter? Heh heh

Chris Simms (former bronco backup QB) arrested in New York

This is too sad to read. Chris Simms arrested for driving while using marijuana. Jeepers Creepers man. What next? Of course, he is not the Bronco's problem anymore, but I was thinking after the team sent him packing that he would buckle down and really work on his talent - ya know?

The story says he was stopped in Manhattan for whatever, then the officers noticed he was slurring his speech and had red eyes. Sounds like a lot of folks around here in Denver (marajuana capital of America). Too bad, so sad. I had hoped for better from him.

Simms is the son of CBS Sports analyst Phil Simms, who led the New York Giants to a 39-20 victory over the Broncos in Super Bowl XXI. Wonder how Phil is taking the news? Not too well probably, and understandably so. Chris had some bad moments on the field, and didn't seem to be finding the right timing.

Still, he does have talent. I hope he gets through this and it changes his life for the better. He is awaiting arraignment in the court in the morning. Here's the story on it
