Are the Denver Quarterbacks Worried about being shopped out?

Today there were rumors again that the Denver Broncos were out shopping Kyle Orton, but when asked in a press conference about it, Josh McDaniels again stated that none of the 4 QBs were being shopped, and at this point would not be. My question for them is, "Why Not"?

Do they want 4 QBs really?  Are their recent actions and acquisitions geared towards some higher purpose?  In my years watching this game, I have not heard of a team having more than 3 QBs, but of course I might not have heard it all.  Did NE have 4?

The zany carrying on at Dove Valley have been confusing to everyone, including some of Denver's most respected sports writers.  Perhaps there is a better plan in the works then we all see, or whatever. But, it is not obvious to anyone at this point.

McDaniels tells everyone after last season that Kyle Orton is his starter. Then he acquires Quinn, and then he drafts Tebow. Now he is again saying that Orton is NOT being shopped out, and TV sports commentators are saying the big guy is Orton.  Confusing?

Champ Bailey said in a TV interview that as far as HE is concerned, Orton is his man for the job. He is completely supportive of the guy as starter.  What the heck is happening here really?  Apparently McDaniels is going to have 4 QBs.

Not for too long I suspect. Is he talking out of the side of his mouth on this, or is it for real?  I mean, think about this a bit. As last season began to deteriorate, he occasionally used Chris Sims, but he never used Brandstater at all.  Am I remembering that correctly?

This guy may be actually planning to start Orton and toss Quinn or Tebow in for short yardage situations. The MLB switches pitchers a lot during games, but this is not the tradition in the NFL. Can you imagine a situation where he uses 3 different QBs in a game?

Confused and astounded and confounded. What more is there to say at this juncture?  Another possibility is that he is waiting for Orton to "ASK" to be traded, outside the normal way, so he can go forward with his other master plan (Tebow and Quinn). Is that crazy talk? I wonder, as I sit here if I know anything at all.

Is there a QB anywhere on earth who can fit this team?

Is there any chance the QB position could be filled with a guy who is tall enough to see where the WRs are?  If a play goes bad, is there a QB in the big pack of 4 who can actually see above the crowd and find the open numbers across the field?

Is there any QB in the fold who can throw the ball over 20 yards accurately?  How about 40 yards, or 50 yards?  Do any of these guys have "quickness" or "fastness" or "agility in the pocket"?

Where is a QB with the capability to throw on the run, at a receiver on the run, hit him and still avoid destruction?  Do we have one of these kinds of QBs?

Why does the Bronco management spend millions of dollars on QBs who are obviously talented, when they already have a talented QB righ there on the field?

Does anyone know Josh McDaniel's IQ?

Dumervil Still Working on Permanent Contract with Broncos

I like Elvis Dumervil. He is a hard working LB who has done everything he was asked to do, and more. I also like his attitude about the job. He has no permanent contract yet, and he has not signed his tender either. In spite of these unsettling facts, he signed waivers earlier this week so he could participate in team drills and mini-camp activities. He is a good man who Denver needs to keep.

Here is what Dumervil says about his situation: “I didn’t have to (referring to signing the injury waiver), but at the end of the day I’m going to be a Bronco in 2010 and I wanted to come out and support the organization and teammates and get acclimated with the new guys,” Dumervil told the media after the practice session. “We have a couple tweaks terminology-wise as far as defense so I don’t want to fall behind mentally.”

I hope McDaniels and Bowlen are drawing up a good offer for Elvis. This guy is exactlty the kind of consummate pro the Broncos need over the long haul, and don't you agree that he has a lot of sacks left in him?  I certainly do.
McDaniels says of Dumervil: “It says a lot about Elvis and what kind of professional he is.”

Again, since all the big priorities seem to be aimed at the QB position lately, it is at least encouraging to hear that they recognized him for his efforts. Just showing up, which is optional for him, is a big statement of his seriousness in wanting to be a Bronco over the long haul.

Please Denver Broncos, get to work on this man's contract will ya?

Is Tebow the Bright Morning Star, or simply another Sarah?

Remember when John McCain brought out Sarah Palin to be the VP candidate at the Republican National Convention?  She was supposed to be the greatest thing since hotcakes. Wow, the conservative movement loved her.

Then the reality set in, at least the reality of how electable she was (not).  The other "twist the stomach" part was watching her try to match wits with Katie Curic in the famous interview. Duh, what a rumble that was.  She looked great, but only knew how to say "just a few things".

Is Tim Tebow going to be like that?  McDaniels is touting him as the next best match for the "Elway Slot",  and no matter which way you turn, there he is. He seems like a very positive and interesting young man.

My worry is twofold:  First I am worried about what bringing a positive young man along so fast could do to his self confidence, if he fails to deliver the promised "Golden Calf".

Secondly I am worried that he might not be able to deliver the promised Mighty Max QB Fix. What if he simply cannot get to the starter position that quickly?  What if McDaniels, in his haste to make Tebow the star of his world, moves him onto the field too quickly? Will the fans be mad at him? The media? Will it hurt him or make him stronger?

Isn't it a fast paced world?  Good grief, what a load of responsibility to heap on the shoulders of a young college QB as he enters the pros in his first year.  This is all feeling wrong to me at this point for some strange reason.  Remember Elvis!  Marlyn!

McDaniels has said Tim Tebow is learning at an accelerated rate and seems to be very bright. He is expected to master the playbook quickly (this is no small feat for anyone folks).  It is sounding like he is going to start or something. HUH?

They have not traded Kyle Orton yet. Wonder why not?

Minicamp for passers is coming soon. Watch to see the reports coming from that.

Brian Westbrook to Denver - Dubious and Questionable

McDaniels says Brian Westbrook is healthy now - Here is a bit on that

Westbrook played in only 7 games last year due to concussions. I think as a fan that offering him a contract could be hazardous to his health - Well I am no doctor, but I don't want to watch a game this fall and see him carried off the field.  I have watched too many of those Discovery Science shows about continual blows to the head.  Even the helmet doesn't keep the blow from being serious.

So it is just speculation, but since he has visited with the Redskins earlier, he might not be coming here - but who knows?  I kinda hope he doesn't, but the way things go he sure might.

He is taking some time to consider his options, and since he has a big money contract with the Eagles, he has to do something at this point.  I hope he stays healthy for his sake, as he is just a young man of what, 30?

The Big Sweep, or the Big Thrashing?

Just ahead of us is the 2010 season, and the proof of McDaniel's moves will be evident. I should not sit in judgement and I try not to, but for us older Bronco fans it is hard to watch some of the stuff that has happened in the last 15 months. Still, as the world changes, so do our professional teams. Even though Mike Shanahan had a handful of less than stellar seasons, I knew last year was going to be different. We are used to being patient here in Denver, and somehow I just knew that Mike would get Jay Cutler into a productive place in 2009.

It was never meant to happen. Pat Bowlen had decided that Mike's success had run it's entire course, and new management was needed. So, the rest is history and we have Josh McDaniels and we do not have Cutler. Even though Cutler had a mediocre season at Chicago last year, I can almost promise (I did say almost) that this year will be much better. In fact, I think Cutler will have a great year this year and it will be what he "woulda had" if he had stayed and worked with Shanahan in 2009.

I was one of the most critical of McDaniels and Bowlen last year, until they won 6 games in a row. I did see that the militaristic approach of McDaniels seemed to be working. Seemed to be was all there was, and the team kinda fell apart for the remainder of the season, finishing 8 and 8, out of the playoffs.  So I recanted my criticism after the first 6, then reinstated it after about 10, and I have continued to feel this way ever since.

Shanahan would have worked with Brandon Marshall and would not have traded him. McDaniels fired him.

Shanahan would have worked with Mike Nolan and improved the Defense. McDaniels fired him.

Now to his credit McDaniels did draft some good men for the Defense this time, and it will be much improved for their presence on the team. At the same time, he has created a Quarterback Dilemma and now is walking away from his starter and placing his future hopes in Tim Tebow. If this was my team I would immediately trade Orton to any team who was interested in him. Not only does that move save Orton's dignity but it also gives the public a better feeling about the team and how they are running it.

From starter to number 3 or 4? I would do it for 2 million bucks. Not sure how Orton feels about it but he has to be tossing stuff around his house or something. I am old school and McDaniels is new school for sure. I am not the only fan who is waiting skeptically for this season to begin. I am of course hoping for the best, but I have no confidence at this point.

Watch Shanahan flourish at Washington. Watch Marshall and Nolan flourish in their respective new teams. Will we also watch the Broncos flourish?  Does Bowlen have one more mediocre year in him for McDaniels?  I am not so sure.  Here is my prediction for what it is worth.

Broncos must at least make it to the first round of the playoffs this year or Bowlen will have a big decision to make. After all this mess that has taken place, I am actually hoping I am wrong and they do well and get the Division title, but I also dream big and my little guy on the other shoulder is whispering, "This is a disaster in the making, and it is going to pot around here".  That is where I am, but I will not miss a game - at least for the first 8 weeks anyway.

Big time wins coming, or bad nasty losses?  Sweep or Thrashing?  Well, it is anyone's guess at this point. Lots of differing opinions out there, but I know I am not alone in seeing McDaniels as an overconfident young man who does not inspire loyalty ........ yet!

More Running Backs Coming - QBs and Running Backs Galore

Always room for one more offensive player here at the Denver Broncos. Let them offensive guys come right on in, and jobs are a'waitin.  Quarterbacks too, as many as you can squeeze onto the bus, just come on down to Dove Valley and all are welcome!

Here comes Brian Westbrook to see if he might just fit in. A bunch of his former teammates are here already, so McDaniels knows he is practically already a member of the team. Josh might be able to use him for some big crucial plays before his knee breaks again.

Got a famous name?  Can you sell jerseys? Get over here man, what are you waiting for? We don't need any defensive guys. You defensive linemen with maturity and experience just stay over there in the NFC East, while we here at the Broncos build a Juggernaut Offense we can simply roll on over you with.

I hear they are getting sick of Big Ben in Pittsburgh. Maybe he could come here too!  What an idea huh?  Hey, maybe Brett Farve too?

Anyway, about the needs at Center and other defensive positions: Any big guy can snap the old pigskin! No big deal at all.  Just hear the cadence, snap on the correct number or sound, and his hands are right there so ..... how hard can it be?

    Quarterback Delimma in Denver

Denver has too many quarterbacks. Does anyone disagree with that? How many does McDaniels need to make a decision?

Top QB contenders will include the remarkable and popular Tebow, followed closely by Quinn and Brandstater. Brandstater is not being talked about much, but I contend that he is the better QB for Denver at this point, being sorely underused last year.

Obviously Denver Broncos need to do something about this mess right now!

Kyle Orton is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in 2011, so why should they keep him in this mix now? Orton is a competent QB and will be perfect for another organization, but since the drafting of Tebow, there are too many competing for the number 1 and 2 spots, and Orton will probably be left out.

He is the victim of so many of the bad communication messages the team has sent out. After the season ended, McDaniels told the press that Orton was the starter for the 2010 season. Bull Crackers!

Kyle Orton needs a new team for either the number 1 or number 2 spot, and he is ready to take the job in any scenario. For his sake, and for the Bronco's credibility as a franchise, he needs a deal as soon as possible.

After that everyone expects Quinn and Tebow to alternate starts or something like that. All that is still ahead and the mandatory upcoming mini-camp will yield more details on it, but how can any fan ever know what McDaniels will be doing?

Too many QBs is a problem for careers. No one lasts forever in the NFL, and each wasted season for any good player is a shame. Trade Orton so he can have some dignity somewhere. It is impossible here in my opinion.

I am praying Brandstater is used this coming season, but he has to beat out Quinn or Tebow. He certainly has at least a fighting chance this coming season.  It will probably come out to be Tebow, Brandstater and Quinn by mid-season. How it will start out is anyone's guess.

Is being a team player really valuable, or not?

What about Elvis Dumervil? He did everything he was asked to do, and then some. Switched positions from Defensive End to Outside Linebacker, and his performance was outstanding. What message are the Broncos sending to him now?  He did not sign his tender with the one year deal, and there has been no word from him or any other teams. Team player all the way. Did it McDaniels way, so what is the team willing to do for the sack king of the NFL?

The looming possibility of labor trouble in 2011 has everything screwed up all over the league. Kyle Orton and Elvis Dumervil are both looking at humble one year deals and their free agency has been held up by the labor difficulties, so how does this work really?  Will the Broncos show some loyalty to their good, loyal and obedient heros?  I wonder and McDaniels statement recently has me scratching my head all over again.

"I know that is a frustrating situation for all of us. We are looking at a place right now in the league where there is some uncertainty for us going forward. I think that is holding up some things on a lot of teams and in a lot of organizations. I think that is part of the whole entire thing.

"We are thrilled with Elvis Dumervil's season last year and excited to have him back and looking forward to his production continuing on for years. As of right now, I know he is working hard in Miami, he stays in touch with Wink (defensive coordinator Don Martindale) and I think we will all be excited when he is back. It is what it is, and other than that, there isn't much to talk about."

He said that stuff back in the PreDraft press conference, and what is he really saying? Maybe he just wants to keep everyone for cheap and wait to see what takes place. Makes sense to me, but looking at this from the "team standpoint", it seems like the Broncos should be making some moves to insure these guys have a long term home. Could be wrong of course, but every time I hear McDaniels talking with praise, I suspect a different outcome.

    Nothing surprises me anymore. Nothing!

Now Orton is a different case than Dumervil. Elvis outperformed in his positiion, and he deserves some attention back from the organization that did a lot of talking about "The Team" and the trades they did were to eliminate the people they believed were not "True Team Players".  Am I right?

So what now man?  How about the one guy on the team who is a nationally known OL, who went above and beyond, did the team thing, and now is in limbo. How about putting the old greenbacks where they belong and demonstrate the value of being a "selfless team guy".

Josh McDaniels Invites Elway's Assistance at Asthma Event

I watched the news last night, and they had a bit on channel 4 about McDaniels doing a presentation at an event having to do with Asthma treatment and issues with that disease, which McDaniels has had personal experience with. I have tried to find the news blurb on their site but can't locate it for some reason, so I have to paraphrase a bit from my memory here:

McDaniels was responding to John Elway's positive comments about their selection of Tim Tebow to be the up and coming QB in Denver the day before. I was shocked to hear McDaniels say that (paraphrases) he was very happy about Elway's comments, and he invited assistance or consultation from Elway at any time for matters concerning the team. Now I did paraphrase, but that was kind of what he was saying, and he said it enthusiastically and with emphasis.

John, get over there and help them some more!

Elway kind of endorsed Tebow in an interview with CBS4 Denver

John Elway Endorses TebowWell our favorite Denver Bronco certainly likes Tim Tebow as is evident in this interview done with CBS4 Denver - "I think there's a connection already with Tim Tebow and the way he's acted, come in answered with the media, the type of person he is. He fits perfect into this community," Elway said. "I think that's why everyone is excited about him because they kind of feel like you know he's the next son of Denver. That's how I felt when I came in."

     Read the Interview Here.

This is a new perspective isn't it? I mean, heck it is confusing as heck to be a Denver Bronco fan and live here in the Mile High City lately. We always knew what was going on back in the Shanahan days, and even before that too. This last year and a half have been really disorienting. Recently the Broncos obtained a new QB, Brady Quinn, and most of us thought the focus during the draft would be offensive linemen, defensive linemen and maybe a center or even a kicker.

So when they drafted Tim Tebow, who is well known and very likable, we all wondered what was going on now?  This new coach is anything but a traditionalist. He does crazy stuff that just leaves fans feeling like their old neighborhood bank got sold to a bigger bank and now they are lost in space.

It has been like that for the last year and a half, and all I can say is thank goodness someone familiar showed up. John Elway makes a difference for me. If he likes Tebow, then I do too. No one I have ever seen in the game has ever sacrificed more than Elway to win games, even the big game. So, respect wins out.

So now they are rumoring that Quinn is being shopped out already. Broncos are denying the rumor of course, but this group somehow does not convince me when they say "no we did not do that". I am waiting a little while longer, then I will believe them.
