Here is the Pre-Season Schedule for Ya - Brandstater will finally get to play again!

The regular-season schedule will be released in April.

2010 PRESEASON SCHEDULE
WEEK DAY DATE OPPONENT SITE TIME TV
1 TBD Aug. 12-16 at Cincinnati Paul Brown Stadium TBD KCNC-TV (CBS4)
2 Sat.  Aug. 21 DETROIT INVESCO Field at Mile High 7 p.m. MDT  KCNC-TV (CBS4)
3 Sun.  Aug. 29 PITTSBURGH INVESCO Field at Mile High 6 p.m. MDT FOX (National)
4 Thu.  Sep. 2 at Minnesota Mall of America Field at H.H.H. Metrodome 6 p.m. MDT KCNC-TV (CBS4)
The Broncos will kick off the preseason the same way they kicked off the 2009 regular season -- in Cincinnati.

It marks the 13th consecutive year the team has opened its preseason on the road, extending the club record. Denver has played 18 of its last 20 preseason openers away from home since 1990. But that hasn't stopped the team from having success -- the Broncos own a 12-3 record in their last 15 openers.

The Bengals and Broncos have met four times in the preseason, with Denver holding a 3-1 edge. The date of the opening contest has yet to be determined.
The following week the team will head back home to give INVESCO Field at Mile High its first taste of Broncos football in the 2010 campaign. The Detroit Lions will be the opponent, a team the Broncos have faced four times in the preseason. The teams have split the previous games, 2-2. The game will be played on Saturday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m. MDT.

In Week 3 -- on Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. MDT -- the Pittsburgh Steelers will head to Denver for a nationally televised Sunday night game. The rematch of a 2009 Monday Night Football game will be the first time the two teams have met in the preseason. In the regular season, Denver owns a 13-7-1 series lead, and the two teams have split their six postseason matchups, 3-3.

The team will close out the preseason in Minnesota on Thursday, Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. MDT against the Vikings. Preseason finales have been kind to the Broncos in recent years -- the team is 10-1 in its last 11 finales, and Denver has won its last five. The Broncos and Vikings have squared off 11 times in the preseason, with Minnesota holding a 6-5 lead.

Denver Bronco News is Hard to Come by

As of this moment there is nothing of interest to report about the Denver Broncos. Nothing significant has happened recently and no big deals have been tendered or talked about.

Now for speculation:  Brandon Marshall is disappointed with his fishing lately, and is hoping for a big pay hike to be coming his way from another team.  Since he is what, number 5 in the league?  Something like that anyway.  So with just pure numbers he is a commodity to be traded.  However, if the suitors do not toss out some pretty big numbers he will simply "take it under consideration" and continue to wait.

No big offers for Kyle Orton have been forthcoming of course, and he is already being named the starter, so the Broncos do not expect any either. What will the Broncos offer Marshall? Well, my guess is that he is not going to be offered anything more than he already has, and if no other team bids large, he will simply be expected to show up at training camp.

He will hold out.  Is this news?

Broncos get Brady Quinn, then Announce Orton is the Starter

Did anyone ever accuse me of holding back?  Am I a hapless blogger with no direction who just wants to cause trouble?  To both I sincerely hope all said "No".

So my personal experience in running a football franchise is certainly lacking.  In fact, for all the millions of words I have spoken or written about the Denver Broncos, I have never even coached a Jr. High football team.

That being said I just have to wonder as a FAN, as to what is going on at the Broncos HQ?  Hey, if someone had said, "dream up a really dumb scheme for the Broncos in the spring", I woulda never thought up this one they are doing now.

Brady Quinn has been acquired by the Broncos.  OK, he would not have been my pick at all, but so they did it and he is their pick and Sims is gone.  So, myself and all the sports world expected Quinn to be the starter with Orton and Brandstater in the number 2 and 3 spots, in whatever order.  Was I, and was everyone else just not paying attention to the deal?

McDaniels has now officially stated that Orton is the starter.  What?  Yes, Orton is the starter.  Can this be a ruse, or a strategy, or a combination of several things here?  Quinn is not the most outstanding QB in the league, and neither is Orton.  Both are similar but Quinn did not have a great time of it last year with the Browns. Most felt he was being drafted as a starter since Orton also did not have a great year last year in the 2nd half of the season.

Now we have 2 Mediocre starters, and one actual franchise QB (number 3 of course)

Most felt Orton had his shot at the glory, and Quinn was exchanged for Peyton Hillis, the running back who was never used much last season by the Broncos.  Everyone figured he was in the Dog House and not being allowed to play so off he goes. Quinn was not who I imagined the Broncos would find, but he was a sweet deal overall financially for the team, so whatever they do he is also an easy trade away later.

So it is Orton, Quinn and then Brandstater - This is of course, the wrong order for these guys.  Here is the order I would like to see.

Brandstater, Quinn and Orton - Then if Tom is really not ready he can easily replaced by the energetic Quinn who is very anxious to prove his worth as a QB.  I guess what we will see is a competition for that starter spot, and personally I hope Brandstater gets the nod. What could happen is that Orton and Quinn could get injured, and then Tom will get his chance.  I have confidence he will do very well if this happens.

Now when the training camp opens up, he will get his once a year opportunity to toss some passes like he used to do back in college, and he did it quite well at that.  Years ago a rookie John Elway took the helm and had some rocky times as I recall. The rest is NFL history man.

Brady likes to Play, not sit on the Bench

This will be the fun part of Brady Quinn coming to Denver. To beat out Kyle Orton as the starter. He wants to play, not sit on the bench like Tom Brandstater (no offense to Tom). Brady sees the opportunity for what it is, instead of being bummed that he is not on the Browns anymore.

Kyle Orton will play better too, since his starter job is being challenged by the new guy. Hey, just for fun why not allow Tom Brandstater to play some this year?

Had to toss that in there. Heck, why not play the talent? Well, er, umm ......

There goes Chris Simms - No big surprise is it?

First they picked up Brady Quinn, then they dump Chris Simms, so is this big news? No it is fully expected and no surprise. Here is the Denver Post Story on it:

Broncos cut quarterback Chris Simms

Now, as the article says, the Broncos have 3 QBs. Of course they have Kyle Orton, Brady Quinn and Tom Brandstater. I have to say again that the Broncos organization is continuing to leave Tom Brandstater in the background, and in fact I believe he is the real QB talent on the team. Mr. McDaniels seems to leave the best talent on the bench, while he moves personnel around and allows certain players to have the helm. Strange team strategy.

I sound like a broken record which I have been playing for about one year now. Why don't they groom Tom Brandstater to be the franchise QB? Spending millions of extra dollars to obtain new QB talent from the available pool, and accomplishing nothing. Just confuses and confounds me but there is one thing: I am getting used to it!

The trades and drafts are not nearly done. Surely they will trade Brandstater away won't they? Why not? They just leave him on the bench anyway.

Broncos get Brady Quinn? HUH?

Well this is funny, but hardly a big surprise since the new Denver Broncos might trade or parlay for anyone in the league.

Broncos get Brady Quinn for Peyton Hills and 2 picks

Brady Quinn? I wonder why they wanted him, while at the same time they ship off Peyton Hillis to the Browns and they also get another draft pick later. Well the Browns are certainly shrewd traders aren't they? We send a really good player for a mediocre QB (wow we already had one of these didn't we?).

Well we sure have some savvy trading going on here don't we?

Quinn is remembered for throwing eight touchdowns and seven interceptions in 10 games last season.

We get a couple of undisclosed draft picks as well. Man, that McDaniels is really working the grid isn't he?

So, my observation is just that Peyton Hillis did not get to play here in Denver so I am happy for him, and I am certain they will play him in Cleveland. Good move Peyton!

8 and 8 here we come again!

Also from the Broncos Website is this:
The Broncos on Thursday made several roster moves, which began with re-signing defensive lineman Le Kevin Smith.

The team also released linebacker Andra Davis and defensive lineman J'Vonne Parker.

Smith, who was acquired by Denver in a trade with New England on Aug. 17, played in 13 games for Denver in 2009. He notched his first career sack against Baltimore in Week 8, and made his first career start against Pittsburgh in Week 9.

Davis played in all 16 games in 2009, starting 13, and finished third on the club with 72 tackles, including a team-high 14 for a loss. It marked the seventh-consecutive season he started at least 10 games.

Parker did not play in his only season with the Broncos after being placed on IR on Aug. 8. He has appeared in 11 games during his NFL career while seeing time on the rosters of Carolina (2008), Atlanta (2008), Baltimore (2007-08), Dallas (2006) and Cleveland (2005-07).

Zubin says and Trico says ... Marshall Might Stay

These days are full of strange and unusual news things aren't they? I mean, little bad boys are robbing students at Auraria, big rocks are falling on the highway near Glenwood, whales are eating their trainers and over at the Nugget's game last Sunday Brandon Marshall chatted with Mike Trico of ESPN fame informally about how he was feeling. What a guy, sharing openly like that. Amazing isn't it?

He told Trico he was open to the possibility of staying in Denver. Second handedly Trico told Zubin Marshall's trip to Seattle went well, but he is in no hurry to decide anything. Great ad lib by Brandon doncha think?

Zubin Mehenti of KVDR wrote this up at this url ==> Marshall Open to Staying in Denver?

Well this kinda reminds me of that press con Brandon did back in the regular season after he had not talked to the media in several weeks, and he praised the coach and the team, and it sounded just rosy all over. He does that! I think he loves toying with everyone. He gets a little smirk goin ya know? Remember at the end of the season.

Who can blame them for printing this stuff? There isn't much news right at the moment.

I wish him the best, but I do believe he is on the way to somewhere. Not too much disagreement on that around the sports world. I want to talk to Adam Schefter about where he thinks Brandon is going.

Jarvis Green in Denver from NE - Bronco Trades

You never know who is coming to Denver these days to visit with McDaniels about a possible Bronco position. Jarvis Green is here now talking about the possibility of adding his talents to our defense.

Also yesterday Jamal Williams was here taking a physical. Jamal is a former San Diego nose tackle. Apparently the first things they are doing is to beef up the Defense. Great idea. See the Denver Post article.

Williams does have a connection here in Denver in Wayne Nunnely (Broncos D Line coach) was Williams position coach in San Diego from 1998-2008. that relationship would be very beneficial if he lands here. He was just recently released by San Diego as a free agent.

Broncos are busy adding offensive linemen too.
Russ Hochstein and wide receiver Brandon Lloyd, as well as wide receiver J.J. Arrington have been added to the roster already.

Former Baltimore player Justin Bannan has also been signed at Nose Tackle. These are the kind of building blocks the Broncos are using in making this year's team come together, and of course these fly under the radar a bit since they are not controversial players. Most of these new changes will add depth to the team.

No offer yet on Brandon Marshall, even from Seattle where he visited last week. Adam Schefter is reporting that Marshall is one of several candidates being considered in Cincinnati this week. They are also looking at Terrell Owens and Antonio Bryand as well.

ESPN blogger James Walker
doesn't think Marshall is going to land with the Bengals despite the interviews.

Brandon Marshall will probably visit several teams before finding a new home, but find it he will. There was a
stinging sports article in seattle warning the team not to allow Marshall to get hired. This stuff always happens, it's a no brainer.

Center of Attention just as always - Brandon Marshall

The subject of Woody Paige's article today is Brandon Marshall and I am not surprised by it, or the opinions he expresses about Brandon. Given all the facts, the good and the bad of Brandon over the 4 years we have known him, Woody presents a grown up argument like I might make. I cannot disagree with him about any of it.

Marshall is a kind of blessing and malediction for Denver. Woody refers to him as Dr Jeckel and Mr Hyde in the Sunday print edition. Kind of true.

26 year old party hardy Brandon is a big money NFL success, but underneath the armor and glory of the gridiron, he is still a young man trying to find his niche place in social situations, not knowing his boundaries sometimes. However, since I have recently had some pretty hard times of my own in dealing with young people of my own (kids and their friends).

I wonder if maybe this is the year Brandon finally realizes his mortality and begins to appreciate all the blessings that are bestowed upon him. It has to happen sometime doesn't it? I have seen it happen to other young people, so why not Brandon too?

Just one year ago we were reading a wonderful review of Brandon by Rev. Leon Kelly, about Brandon's fund raising effort on behalf of the after school program Kelly founded. Brandon did that good thing ladies and gentlemen, not me or you, but Brandon. He deserves credit for what he has done right, which seldom gets mentioned. He is struggling in his world to find where he belongs, what his limits are and what he should be doing. All young people have that struggle. Not many are big football stars, and of course, some kids mature quicker than others. Brandon has been slow. It doesn't mean he is bad.

Since he has been one of several Broncos testifying in the recent trial of Willie Clark, I just have to believe he has been affected in a sobering way. I sure hope so anyway, but even if he is still prone to party I am convinced that due to all the negative publicity he got from it, that he is toning it down a notch or 2. I believe in these kids ability to make the right decisions, even when the matter is complicated by millions of real dollars to spend. He has had to come to grips with his involvement in that incident as is indicated by his recent comments:

Marshall admitted last week during the Darrent Williams' murder trial that he "probably escalated" the disturbance outside The Safari Club in the minutes prior to Williams suffering a fatal bullet wound to his neck on Jan. 1, 2007. Willie Clark is the man accused of shooting Williams. [mentioned in this article]

So now after a very mediocre year for the team, he is off to the Seahawks to see if a deal can be found along with a fresh start for him and his reputation. I know there will be detractors in Seattle if he lands there, but I am guessing he will surprise all the critics this year. This is the year Brandon Marshall is going to achieve more in the NFL than before, and he simply HAS to get away from his chief critic, Josh McDaniels to do it.

I don't diagree with Woody Paige, but I just wanted to add some further comments to the mix. Brandon has done a lot of growing up here in Denver, and Denver represents a lot of painful memories for him. I believe he will do better in Seattle where he gets to start over and be the man he wants to be, with a coach that is not looking at him as though he were the devil.

This is also not really McDaniel's fault either. He is just reacting to what he has seen from Brandon. He is a militaristic coach, has lots of rules (another discussion), and is probably appalled by Brandon's behavior.
His reactions are predicable, whether or not you agree with his coaching style.

I personally hope Brandon does go to Seattle. He can at least have a new start and attempt to display another side to his personality and make a new reputation. I also think if he is coached by someone who wants him on the team, he will perform better too. Seattle will have the benefit of getting the better Brandon Marshall on their team. Sure hope I am right!

Get Ready to Say Your Goodbyes to Marshall

Brandon Marshall is meeting with the Seattle Seahawks today and they may make an offer, after which the Broncos have 7 days to match, or let him go. We all know they are going to let him go, but Seahawks will have to give up a first round draft pick. I guess even that is negotiable (everything is subject to any changes the teams agree on), so get ready to say our goodbyes to Brandon Marshall.

So like it or not, he is on the way out. I found a website you can go to to keep up with him and it says it is his official website - Brandon Marshall - and you can send him a goodbye email if you want to. Well, maybe it is a bit too soon for this, but the handwriting is on the wall for this one. No matter what Bowlen said, and what McCoach said, he is going somewhere. I can just imagine the private talks they have about him.

Isn't it funny how they always talk one way, and end up doing the opposite? That is the way of the NFL most of the time.

I have no idea if the rumors about Donovan McNabb have any credibility or not, but the Broncos do need a quarterback of higher quality than Kyle Orton. Over at the Eagles they have 3 to choose from, McNabb, Kolb and Vick. Ya think the Broncos will want to play with any of these guys? I have my doubts but it is an interesting idea. For their own reasons, the Eagles are apparently wanting to trade them all.

Why not use Brandstater? I have not heard a word about him for a year or more. Apparently he is still on the roster, but they never use him at all. He could be the inexpensive way for the Broncos to have a franchise QB without dipping into the geriatrics pool to get one. Brandstater was selected by the Broncos in the sixth round (174th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft from Fresno State University where he was a three-year starter for the Bulldogs.

So is it too early to say goodbye to Brandon? Sniff, dang. Well let's wait until tomorrow!

Brandon Marshall is 1st Round Tender - Dumervil, Orton,

Now the negotiations begin, and the Broncos offer up Brandon Marshall as 1st round tender. So - is this bad? Not really because if someone steps up to take him, they will have to make an offer, and give the Bronc0s a 1st round pick in the draft. No other terms I can imagine would work, so there it is. I would say it is a sign of value for Brandon, and it is an opportunity to get a 1st rounder if they do let him go. I am giving this a 50/50 chance of happening under these terms.

Dumervil is kinda similar as a first and third round high tender. Is anyone going to step up on that? Well, probably not because again, that is a very high price on top of salary for even a great defensive player like Elvis. McDaniels and Bowlen are gambling a bit here, but if they lose their good players they are assured of getting some darn great players in return, which is what they need all over.

Orton is the same deal as Marshall. 1st round tender on him, and well, er, umm - I am not sure he is worth all that much ya know? Hey, what do I know? Then they toss Cris Kuper up there as 1st round tender as well. Ya think? Nope, I don't but there it is anyway. Lots of posturing but maybe one will move this way. Gimmie a 1st round pick will ya? Here's our Gaurd so let's see the 1st rounders here.

What about Scheffler for a 2nd round pick? Now here is an opportunity for some team, and maybe this one will be a go. My prediction about him may actually come true. If anyone makes a call on this one, the Broncos will jump on it for sure, and the guy who talks out of turn will be sent packing. He won't mind I think.

Marshall - Dumervil - Orton - Kuper - Scheffler

Now there is a pack of 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks on the table. Want to make a toothpick bet on any of these? My guess is that the Ravens just might want to go elsewhere for their new targets. However, I know this: If anyone offers up their 1st round pick and makes a big offer to Brandon, the Broncos will not match it. They will absolutely let him go!

The best talent is up for grabs and the Broncos know it is not a sign of disrespect. Most if not all of them will be here in 2010. If not, Broncos will have some great talent coming in the door. Should be an exciting trade time.

Posturing before the trades - how about Brandon Marshall?

I am reading stuff that is very interesting indeed. Right after the end of the last season Brandon Marshall cleaned his locker out, and he took his name plate or something (I can't exactly remember what, but it was significant) off the locker. I think he did it on purpose to show his disgust about the head coach then, and maybe it was a rant, not a signal.

Recently Brandon has been interviewed and has made some quotes. He is talking positive, McDaniels is talking positive and Bowlen is talking positive too. Is this a staged thing, or is it real? I really believed at season's end that Marshall was going to seek a trade, even though he is a restricted free agent.

Football commentators like Shannon Sharpe have stated a belief that Marshall will be wearing a new jersey soon. Actually when I heard Sharpe say this, I was more influenced to believe it too. He said there are 3 teams that would make acceptable offers for him without a doubt (paraphrased). Many in the sports writing world agree, some do not.

Here is what Brandon recently said: (from this link)

“Last year I handled things totally wrong,” Marshall said. “I just looked at the business side of things and took things too personally. This year I’m going to remove myself from the situation and let the Broncos decide the direction we’re going to go in as an organization.”

Bowlen also had this to say: (this link)

“I think Brandon is going through a maturing process. Personally, I saw change in his personality and approach to things [in recent times]. He didn’t have the same sort of attitude and anxiety that he’s had. I personally would like to see him stay. And there’s still a good possibility that could happen. Now, if the head coach sits down and says no, I want to trade him, or I’ve got a deal that’s going to be beneficial to the club, I don’t think I’m going to override him.”

So it is evident that no matter how strongly Bowlen feels about Brandon, he will step aside and allow Josh McDaniels to do whatever he wants to do. Wow, that is confidence isn't it? Amazing stuff. I cannot imagine him being that in love with the head coach, but I guess he is and we all have to live with it.

So I am not going to paste up Josh McDaniels comments here. I will paraphrase - He just feels that Brandon is welcome and he wants him to continue to be a part of the team. He agrees that Brandon is a contributor and has worked hard to improve. His public position is that he wants him to return and play for the Broncos again. OK, if that is true, then fine. It is hard for me to believe.

He also has said he wants Sheffler back too. He is another one I expect to find another place to play. I just feel both of them will be traded and all this public relations is a smoke screen and that is my opinion. I could be wrong of course, but that is what I think.

Denver gets a good draft pick this year after trading Cutler away last year and I believe they are going to try to get a new wide receiver - again, I could be wrong but it is a practical idea to consider. Also wonder who is going to be their QB. I don't think it will be Orton do you?
