Is Josh McDaniels a Good NFL Coach?

Hey, there is not too much to talk about these days since our Broncos went south on us, but some things are still needing to be discussed. Is Josh McDaniels a good NFL coach? That is the subject I want to throw out here.

Many say Josh is a control freak type of coach - Is this really a bad thing, and is it really true?

From USSportspages
"And why the titillation with guys who have worked for the Patriots dictator? He’s a complete control freak to the point where you have to wonder how much of their job any Belichick assistant is allowed to do (I can picture the Pat’s coach manning the cheat-cam himself). It’s not like Belichick’s disciples have had much success when leaving New England"

From the Golf Channel (yeah, I know)
"Another Bill Belichick Clone Control Freak Strikes Again.
Josh McDaniel has got to be the most STUPID Coach in the NFL...

Let me get this straight.
1) On Wednesday most of us NFL Fans Saw the Tape of The Best Player on the Denver Broncos Football Team Brandon Marshall Pull his hamstring in practice on Wednesday.
2) What does Belichick Wannabe Moronic Control Freak Josh McDaniel Do to him for Pulling his Hamstring? Inactivates him for a Do or Die Last Game of the Season for your team to get into the Playoffs?"

From Denver Post - Defending McDaniels (discussed today on Mike Rosen radio)
"Letter-writer Timothy Cunningham states that Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels is a control freak and that we should bring back “Shanny” [Mike Shanahan]. I, however, applaud McDaniels for doing the right thing. Much of the problem in sports these days is due to coaches who will not stand up to these overpaid, spoiled, selfish, so-called professional athletes. We need more coaches like McDaniels, and more fans who will stop accepting childish behavior in the name of winning."

From the Denver Post (yeah, I know) Should Bowlen Fire McDaniels?
"Firing McD after only one year may not be the way Bowlin works, but in this case it should be. Does he allow his employees in his other business ventures to perform at minimal levels of success, cost him millions in poorly invested and managed dollars, show absolutely no promise of improved performance, and run off clients/customers with their anti-social behavior? I seriously doubt that Bowlin got to the economic level he enjoys by running his businesses with the same laissez faire attitude he is extending to McD."

So of course these are not the only opinions out there, but I can tell you that opinions are directly influenced by the Win/Loss record of a team. During the 6th and 7th week of the season, you could not find many of these kinds of posts, but they have been appearing more and more since week 8 and beyond. Many fans think he (McDaniels) is over controlling and too media conscious - controlling what the players say and how they say it, etc.

I think he is a pretty good coach, but needs to learn how to change it up from time to time in order to beat the film watching teams they play. Always up the middle, always using Orton with no consideration of allowing Tom Brandstater to play, and not allowing some running backs to use their skill because for some mysterious reason he is mad at them. If he could just loosen up a bit and be more "REAL" with the players, I think he would be getting more out of them for performance.

Just too many petty things seemed to come up about him for it all to be untrue, but still we have to give him credit for a fairly good season at the age of 32. We all need to remember that he is just a kid in the world of NFL Coaches. Overall he did ok, and the end record was just about what I predicted it would be (no credit for me as I changed my mind a few times).

Next season I am hoping he will develop some different running plays like the Reverse, Double Reverse, Pitch Out, Pitch Back and quite a few others that would have worked against the teams we played from game 9 to the end. Where are those other plays?

We know Josh is a regular guy after that ESPN recording that was aired of him yelling at the team on the sidelines using familiar expletive terms. So, we all need to lobby to get him to loosen up and maybe let the players say what they want to say to the media, and to the other players too. Add some new plays to the play book, and try to relax a bit and try to enjoy some of the experience ya know?
