5 Denver Broncos Make the Pro Bowl

Five players will represent the Broncos in the 2010 Pro Bowl, the league announced on Tuesday.

Champ Bailey, Ryan Clady, Brian Dawkins, Elvis Dumervil and Brandon Marshall have all earned spots in the annual all-star game, which will be played on Sunday, Jan. 31, at Dolphin Stadium in South Florida at 5:30 p.m. MST and will be televised by ESPN.

Clady, Dumervil and Dawkins have been named starters, while Bailey and Marshall made the squad as backups. A three-pronged equation propelled those names to the AFC's squad, as each conference's roster was determined by consensus votes of fans, players and coaches. Each group's vote counted one-third towards determining the respective Pro Bowl rosters.

Can Broncos get in the playoffs even now?

The Broncos have to beat the KC Chiefs next Sunday, and two out of these three teams will have to lose - Baltimore, Jets, Pittsburgh

Or the Broncos have to beat the KC Chiefs, and these teams have to win - Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Houston

If Broncos lose to the KC Chiefs, then these teams have to lose - Baltimore, Houston, Jacksonville and Jets

I think I have this right but correct me if I am wrong. It is hard to figure at this point.

The Denver Broncos have a chancy future this season and nothing is certain at this point.

Nightly News is Reporting Hillis will Play Sunday

The news story is that Hillis might finally be getting a chance to play on Sunday against the Eagles, a game in Philadelphia that the Broncos must win. Ok, it's about time, and this is no reflection on Hillis at all, but there will be pressure on him to perform after the other backs have not performed recently. Fan pressure!

That situation is not the fault of Hillis, and I hope he can take the ball that extra few yards needed to get 4th down conversions and get into the Red Zone too. A lot of stuff to lay on a player who has been benched for quite a long time.

Hillis himself has not complained about this situation while he has not been able to play, and has been a good sport while waiting. Everyone on the team has held back any criticism of McDaniels during the entire season. We fans however, have not held back when we see what appears to be dumb judgement.

We have praised him a lot, especially during the first 6 weeks. Criticism was withheld even after week 8 was loss number 2. After that of course, the opinions started to fly out and even the sports writers got into it a bit. Now their backs are against the wall. McDaniels needs to pull out all the stops.

He indicated in a recent interview (on tv a couple of days ago) that he would throw everything the Broncos have at the Eagles on Sunday. I got the impression that no matter what happened that he had a plan to deal with it. That could mean Hillis, or Brandstater or any number of other things.

How about some new running plays? Every heard of the reverse Josh? Up the middle will not work, and the Eagles will be expecting up the middle. Do the first play up the middle, then switch it up and run a reverse and get 40 yards man.

Then had it off to Hillis to get that tough 4th down yard or 2, or into the Red Zone. Use different players and different plays. The Eagles will not be expecting that.

Throw in the Kitchen Sink too. All of it will be new stuff they did not see on the films!

Denver Broncos Complete illustrated History

If you love the Broncos, you'll love this terrific new book capturing half a century of your favorite team - Denver Broncos: The Complete Illustrated History.

From the brown and gold uniforms of the team's inaugural campaign, through the rise of the Orange Crush defense in the 1970s and the back-to-back Super Bowl titles in the 1990s, to the budding stars of today, this is the history of all the great teams, players, and moments from the Broncos' first 50 seasons. Featured in over 150 photographs and fascinating stories are original Broncos like Lionel Taylor and Frank Tripucka, legends from Floyd Little to John Elway, and franchise icons like Karl Mecklenburg, Tom Jackson, Terrell Davis, and many more.

Written by lifelong fan and longtime team executive Jim Saccomano, this glorious celebration is a must for every fan of the orange and blue.

Where do the Broncos go from here?

I believe it is time for changes in the offensive lineup for Josh McDaniels. Some new plays, using benched players, and some better strategies to face each team remaining. Overall the team has done better than I gave it credit for at the beginning of the season.

Orton has more than just one target for passes. He needs to use them.

They have more than one running back, and they need to use them.

Running plays up the middle are not working. They need to try some other plays.

Those are my humble suggestions. I wonder what if any they will try? They have to do something different to succeed. The current stagnant play calls are tiresome. Also, why not utilize more personnel? After all, they are still paying these players who sit on the bench.

The upcoming game against the Eagles will be very difficult. They are executing very well and winning games. McDaniels needs to change things up. Simple and true!

Where do the Broncos Stand Now?

Well in spite of their bumbling performance yesterday, the Broncos are still in the mix for a wild card spot in the playoffs. Amazing isn't it? Wonders will never cease. I have completely recanted my criticism of McDaniels for trading Cutler, but some things are still in contention, like why they never seem to use Hillis?

San Diego has totally stayed with it and are the division leaders hands down, and they deserve it for the way they turned it around after a miserable start this season, while the Broncos are kind of the opposite of that.

The Broncos (8-6) are still in the AFC wild-card hunt but they were expecting a win over Oakland (5-9), who won at Invesco Field for the second straight season thanks to Russell. Now, they'll likely have to win at Philadelphia and beat Kansas City at home to end their three-year playoff drought.

BRONCOS LOSE AGAINBroncos running back Knowshon Moreno stands at midfield after the Broncos lost to the Raiders 20-19 on Sunday at Invesco Field at Mile High.

"We have no margin for error," defensive end
Vonnie Holliday said. "The sense of urgency was supposed to be today. And unfortunately it wasn't."

Can the Broncos win against the Eagles? They are currently 10 and 4, so the smart money is on the Eagles. I want them to win of course to keep the season hopes alive, but I am not going to lay out any money on it.

Sunday, the Broncos got into the red zone four times and they scored all four times, but only one of those was a touchdown. Matt Prater kicked three field goals.

“When you do that and you just let teams continue to hang around, I don’t care who they are, they’re going to beat you,” Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton said.

GAME DELAY: With 6:53 to play in the fourth quarter, and the Broncos at the Raiders’ 2-yard line, the game was delayed for several minutes. A fan from the south stands was shining a laser light on the players, prompting the delay.

“It was green light that was hitting players in the face, so they were taking every precaution to make sure we were safe out there,” McDaniels said.

Was that fan ejected? I hope so, but he should have to spend a few days in jail for what he accomplished for the Raiders!

Bad News for the Broncos Today - Raiders Happy

Is the season just about over or what? Oh well, it is what it is. The final score says it all, but the real story is that the Raider's coach put JaMarcus Russell in late in the 4th and somehow he got them in the end zone with about 30 seconds left - Dog Gone It

BRONCOS FALL TO RAIDERS
Opponent

With 35 seconds left in regulation, JaMarcus Russell -- inserted into the game for injured starter Charlie Frye -- threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Chaz Schilens, and the Broncos fell to the Raiders, 20-19, on Sunday.

Bronos play against Charlie Frye Today

So here comes the Raiders again, but this time they have benched their 32 million dollar QB JaMarcus Russell in favor of number 3 backup Charlie Frye.

On December 17th Josh McDaniels said of Frye, “It’s not going to change our preparation,” Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels said. “We’ll get familiar with (Frye) this week. He’s played in games, obviously, in this league for a few years. This won’t be his first opportunity (to play). We’ll get to know him over the next four days. We don’t expect their offense to change that dramatically. We’ll prepare like normal.”

“We have to be prepared for whoever they throw out there,” said Broncos linebacker Andra Davis, a former teammate of Frye’s in Cleveland. “They’re going to do what they’re going to do. They’ve got three good running backs, a lot of explosive players, so whoever is in charge (of the offense), we have to be ready for them.”

Will the Broncos play Payton Hillis? That is the 64 Thousand Dollar Question that many fans were asking on popular talk radio last week.
Hillis, who led the team with 343 yards on 68 carries last season, has 54 yards on 12 attempts this season.

This will be a strange game and I am predicting that Hillis may get some playing time today. I hope so because Moreno and Buchhalter are both on the limp.

Each Game is Important Now - One Game at a Time

Denver Broncos have a challenge before them. Each game is very important now, just like a playoff game. In order to stay in the hunt for the playoff spot, division or wildcard, they must win each game. That is exactly how they are looking at the contest ahead against the Raiders on Sunday 12/20.

"The fact that we are 8-5 and they're 4-9 doesn't really make a difference to us," Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. "It's a division game. We know it's going to be tough and physical, and they're playing a different style of football. They're aggressive. The word I use to describe them is explosive."

Last year the Raiders came to our stadium and beat the Broncos 31 -10, and it was a humiliating day for the team. They do not want any such thing to happen Sunday, and they are going to do everything they can to win it. I believe they are dead serious and will play well, execute well and win that game.

"The only thing we know is if we win three (remaining games), we'll have a chance to play longer," McDaniels said. "That's what we're focused on right now, and it starts with the Raiders."

The game, with kickoff scheduled for 2:05 p.m. MST, will be broadcast on CBS4 (KCNC-TV). Stick with DenverBroncos.com for continuing coverage throughout the contest.

Gamecenter <===

I sure wish they would try some new plays. It seems over the course of several recent games, the other guys have been viewing the Broncos game films and they realize we run up the middle all the time. How about a reverse, double reverse or end around for some mix up stuff?

Broncos will face Frye on Sundey against Raiders

Charlie FryeIn a really interesting move, the Oakland Raiders switched things up for the coming game on Sunday with the Broncos. Instead of using JaMarcus Russell or Gradkowski, they are starting Charlie Frye, who previously was the number 3 QB on the team. Russell started the first 9 games with the Raiders, but after a disappointing performance they hooked up Gradkowski for the next few games until be got injured last week. Everyone expected JaMarcus Russell to step up again, but their head coach and owner had a different plan.

AP Photo

Frye has not started a game since October of 2008 while playing for the Seattle Seahawks, and I am absolutely certain he will become a target for several defense linemen and linebackers like Elvis Dumervil. As these things generally go, I do not expect a great performance from Frye, but he should easily be better than Russell. I wonder what would happen if the Broncos were to start Tom Brandstater to give Orton a break. Wouldn't that be interesting?

Why not use Hillis?

Josh McDaniels is stubbornly sticking with his decision to use Moreno and Buckhalter as his RBs, even when Hillis just might be the answer to short yardage conversions. Radio talk shows were buzzing with fan complaints about this after the game on Monday and Tuesday. They want Hillis to carry the ball.

So Sports Illustrated asked the coach:

Hey Josh, is Hillis in the doghouse or something?

"He's not in the doghouse,'' McDaniels said. Apparently Spenser Larsen injured his back on the opening kickoff, leaving Hillis as the only fullback on the team, and that is his reason for not using him for those short yardage opportunities.

McDaniels said, "We've had a pretty good running game with Buckhalter and Moreno this year, and that's why we're not going to change it.''

McDaniels blamed the short-yardage failures on poor blocking by the offensive line, not bad runs by Moreno. Dave Logan of the ride home also was saying that same thing, and Dave also said that even Jim Brown could not have made yardage that day against the Colts.

Kyle Orton also agreed with Dave and Josh by saying "Knowshon runs the ball pretty tough in short yardage. I mean, he can't run through everybody,'' Orton said. "We've got to do a better job of blocking for him, do a better job of getting the surge. And that's on everybody on the offense, not just Knowshon. So, we've got good short-yardage backs and Peyton's a good one, as well, but this isn't Knowshon's problem. This is an offensive problem.''

Thanks to SI for their great article on this: [link to SI]

So do you agree with Josh and Kyle? Us fans are a rowdy bunch aren't we?

Listening to the ride home on KOA

I listened to "The Ride Home" show last night hosted by Dave and Lois. Many of the callers made the same exact comment I would have made.

Why do the Broncos always run up the middle? Did they forget there is a reverse play, or a double reverse and a run around the side? The Broncos never do that!

One caller totally discredited Josh McDaniels for not using another RB for the short yardage plays. I wonder about this too. Why Moreno? Especially when he is limping and hurt.

Anyway, just for the sake of conversation I bring this up. It hit a nerve somehow. I ask that same question every game. Josh is running the offense so it falls on him. I guess he just likes "up the middle".

Marshall Makes NFL History

Since 2000, Terrell Owens held the NFL record for catches in a single game with 20, as a then-member of the San Francisco 49ers. That all changed on Sunday, as Brandon Marshall's 21 catches for 200 yards in Indianapolis set a new league standard. But that effort wasn't enough to secure a win, as the Colts stopped the Broncos' second-half comeback to secure a 28-16 victory.

The Colts controlled most of the first half, streaking to a 21-0 lead behind three touchdown passes by Peyton Manning. Late in the second quarter, the Broncos began to snatch the momentum in their favor. Kyle Orton engineered a 12-play, 80-yard drive, capped by a 5-yard touchdown strike to Marshall.

In the second half, the Denver defense clamped down on Manning, intercepting him twice. The second of those picks was by rookie Darcel McBath, and the turnover was converted into a 28-yard Matt Prater field goal. After a quick three-and-out by the Colts to start the fourth, Orton and the offense continued their rhythm, marching 68 yards downfield on 12 plays. The exclamation point was another 5-yard touchdown catch by Marshall. After a failed two-point conversion, the Broncos had cut the Colts' lead to 21-16 with just under 10 minutes left in the game.

Off of that score, Indianapolis used a backbreaking drive that lasted more than seven minutes, with Manning finding Dallas Clark for a 1-yard touchdown. Trailing by 12 points, Orton and the offense got one more chance to work. He found Marshall on a 7-yard slant, marking the receiver's 21st catch and a new NFL record.

Today's Loss Disappointing - Broncos Could have Won it

Seems like the Broncos started to play like they wanted to win in the middle of the 3rd quarter, and throughout the 4th quarter, but they kind of just squandered the first 2 1/2 quarters watching the Colts play. It was so confusing to watch this game. Being in Awe of the Colts is normal I guess, but these guys can play the game and could have won this one. Capable and able, but not willing somehow.

http://www.denverbroncos.com/resources/custom/Images/Game%20Center%20Matchup/2009/marshall_gamecenter_091213.jpg

Great performance by Brandon Marshall who caught 21 passes during the game, and wanted to win badly. You could tell each time he had the ball that he did not want to make it easy for the Colts to take him down. He deserves great credit for trying to make it happen. He is an amazing receiver in this game.

The NFL's single-game record for receptions belongs to Brandon Marshall. The fourth-year receiver notched an NFL record 21 catches for a career-high 200 yards against the Colts. But the Broncos second-half comeback came up short, as they fell to the undefeated Colts, 28-16. Marshall had both of the Broncos' touchdowns, while Matt Prater added a 28-yard field goal. Peyton Manning was intercepted three times by the Broncos' defense and the Colts were shut out in the second half -- until one final drive in the fourth that sealed the victory.

Elvis Dumervil leads the NFL in SACKS

Isn't it amazing to realize our own Elvis Dumervil is the NFL's leading defensive sacker? Wow, that is huge, and don't think for a minute the Colts have not been talking about him during this week of practice. You bet they have.

Take that fact along with the overall rank of the Denver Defense and you have a winning combination. Now they are number 3 in the league, and they deserve it.

"A lot of outside linebackers in the 3-4 system are very gifted pass rushers, and I would say that Elvis is no different," McDaniels says of the 5-11, 248-pound Dumervil, whom McDaniels immediately believed had a frame better suited for linebacker than the D-line. "He's certainly a little bit of a different type of pass rusher because he's shorter, but he has long arms. And he's got great quickness."

Let's don't forget to add "agressive" and very "dedicated" to the list of adjectives. That's the Denver Defense this year.

Some betters are favoring Denver +7 in the point spread Sunday. Colts have to lose sometime don't they?

Denver Broncos vs Indianapolis Colts NFL Week 14

Denver Broncos vs Indianapolis Colts NFL Week 14: Two teams coming off very impressive victories last week will collide, as the (8-4) Denver Broncos [+7] storm into Lucas Oil Stadium looking to upset the undefeated (12-0) Indianapolis Colts [-7]. This AFC game kicks off this Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM ET on CBS. The OVER/UNDER for this NFL Week 14 Picks game is set at a total of 44.

Denver is coming off a strong showing, as it made it two in a row after a dreadful 4-game losing streak by routing Kansas City 44-13.

photo

Denver Broncos linebacker Andra Davis (54) breaks up a pass intended for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Bobby Wade (80) during the first quarter of an NFL football game Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009 in Kansas City, Mo. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)
"I want to win. I'm a Bronco," head coach Josh McDaniels said. "We're going to have more games against the Chiefs and Matt Cassel. It's going to take a good effort to contain him and stop him every time we play him."

Indy is also coming off an impressive display, as it handled one of the league’s hottest teams Tennessee Titans, 27-17. The Colts tied the (2007-08) Patriots record for consecutive regular season wins with 21.

"It (the record) is one of those things we talk about. We kind of identify the milestones on Wednesday morning when we get in. We talk about some of the things we're accomplishing," coach Jim Caldwell said. "The guys appreciate it, but it's not something that goes to their heads."

"You try to tell these guys that when you win a couple in a row, or three or four in a row, this is not normal," said Peyton Manning, a three-time league MVP (2003, 2004, 2008). "It's not normal to win 10 or 11 or 12 games every year. But these guys that have been here five years would tell me it is normal for us. That's all they've done."

It should be safe to plan for those January football parties. After embarrassing the Kansas City Chiefs, 44-13, on an otherwise gloomy December -- that's right, December -- afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium -- that's right, Arrowhead -- the Broncos are in great position to extend their season beyond the regular 16 games.

The victory was only the Broncos' second in 17 December games at Kansas City. Win here late and the playoffs must no longer be a mirage for a Broncos team that has suffered through a postseason drought of three consecutive seasons.

The Broncos are 8-4 with home games remaining against 4-8 Oakland and 3-9 Kansas City.

The magic win total of 10 that is so common among playoff qualifiers appears to be within a bent-elbow reach away.

Well what about the standings now?

Well the Broncos are in a close 2nd in the AFC West and San Diego is first of course. The next team we play is the nemesis of the season, and the game will be a proving ground for the Broncos. They had to win the game on Sunday against KC, and it seemed better than it really was after Matt Kassel tossed the Broncos a few interceptions, and KC gave field position away with that fake punt. Broncos were ok, but Defense was the best.

Next Sunday is where we will see if the team has any playoff potential. Depending on how the other teams in the division do, they could lose that game, and only that game. If somehow they could win, they would spoil the perfect season the 12 and 0 Colts have going. They are playing well consistently, so the Broncos will have to grab the momentum right at the first of the game. I just hope they win the coin toss and can power up and throw the Colts off their game.

Do you realize that if the Colts win on Sunday, they will have won 22 consecutive regular season games, including last season? If somehow the Broncos could be the spoilers on that stuff it would be big big big indeed for them. I just hope it is an exciting game and not a one sided story from the beginning. I want my team to do well. Actually I want them to win but the odds are against them. Do you believe?

A day for the Broncos to shine - Denver 44 KC 13

Well the debate is over. Denver did beat Kansas City and handily at that. Lots of action in this game, but the whole time KC was making mistakes while Denver did not. For the remainder of the season, that will be the key to everything. Winning means not making mistakes in the NFL. While it may not be the only thing, it is a very big thing.

Kassel was not able to connect with his receivers today at any good rate. Orten did better. Denver Defense came though with several interceptions.

BRONCOS 41, CHIEFS 13 - Gray Caldwell Bronco Play by Play

Q4 11:51: Three incomplete passes from Croyle bring up fourth down. On the last of the three there was a flag for holding on the Chiefs, but the penalty was declined. Colquitt is back in to punt to Royal, who is back in the game. He fields the kick at the 20-yard line, makes some dfenders miss and brings it out to the Kansas City 41-yard line. That’s a return of 39 yards on a 50-yard punt.

Q4 11:26: Orton finds Scheffler on first down for a big gain to the 22-yard line. It’s a 19-yard gain, and the next play brings a run by Buckhalter for a loss of a yard. Marshall gained two yards on a pass from Orton on second down, and Royal took an end-around for another yard to set up a 37-yard Matt Prater field goal on fourth down, which the kicker drilled through the uprights.

Q4 8:19: A pass from Croyle to Cottam picks up a quick first down, then the two connect again for a nine-yard gain. Castille takes a carry for 16 yards and another first down on the ensuing play. Darcel McBath, Vonnie Holliday, Robert Ayers, Wesley Woodyard, Darrell Reid and Ty Law are all seeing extensive playing time on defense now, as some starters seem to be done for the day.

Q4 6:23: The Chiefs have a 3rd-and-10 on the Denver 13-yard line after two Croyle incompletions. The quarterback lines up in the shotgun before Kansas City calls its second timeout of the half.

Q4 6:19: Croyle lines up under center on third down, drops back and tries to find Wade, but the pass bounces just off his hands incomplete. On fourth down, the Chiefs offense is still on the field. Croyle is in the shotgun. He takes the snap and finds Castille, but the fullback is short of the first down. The turnover on downs gives the Broncos offense the ball at its own 5-yard line.

Q4 6:03: Chris Simms is in at quarterback, and he hands the ball to Peyton Hillis, who picks up a quick five yards.

Q4 4:40: Hillis picks up four more yards on second down, setting up 3rd-and-1, but a false start penalty makes it 3rd-and-6. Hillis takes the carry and picks up the first down, keeping the clock running.

Q4 3:10: Hillis continues to carry the ball, and the Broncos are left with a 3rd-and-3 after two rushes net seven yards. On the ensuing play, Hillis picks up 13 yards to pick up the first down and bring the game to the two-minute warning.

Q4 2:00: Hillis pushes his tacklers up the sideline for a 12-yard gain and another first down, meaning Simms can simply take a few quarterback kneels to end the game and seal the victory.

With the 44-13 win, the Broncos move to 8-4 with a matchup at undefeated Indianapolis next on the schedule.

Broncos heading over to Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday

Fresh off a Thanksgiving night win against the New York Giants, the Broncos are back on the road to take on the division-rival Kansas City Chiefs.

"Every time you play on the road against a divisional team, it's going to be a heightened atmosphere, intensity, everything," Kyle Orton said. "We'll have to play our best ball and face a team that's playing really hard and playing good football as of late."

Though the Chiefs sit at 3-8, the Broncos know they have plenty of talent in all three phases of the game, and Kansas City always seems to play better in the friendly confines of Arrowhead Stadium.

"They play well at home," Champ Bailey said. "It's one of the toughest places to play in the league, period. Regardless of how their record looks, when you go in there, you've got to bring your 'A' game."

The game, with kickoff scheduled for 11 a.m. MST, will be broadcast on CBS4 (KCNC-TV). Stick with DenverBroncos.com for continuing coverage throughout the contest.

Denver preparing for KC

Denver Broncos are practicing and preparing for KC this coming Sunday. Perhaps before the 4 straight losses, they might not have been quite so concerned, but the mental aspect of their game is certainly being considered. Everyone is focusing on their job and doing it right. No fumbles, no turnovers (unless it is our defense doing it) and as few penalties as possible. If the Broncos can pull it off, they will be much more confident to face Indy the following Sunday.

The defense stepped up against the Giants, forcing three fumbles and holding them to 267 yards. The same unit allowed an average of 29.3 points and 350.8 yards with two total turnovers during the skid. That game should be the turning point for the remainder of the season, at least we all hope so.

Red Zone Itus still affects the Broncos. Coach McDaneils said, "It was frustrating to get down (red zone) for the second time and to have some mishaps," Orton said. "We had some pretty dumb penalties. That's been our Achilles' heel, penalties and the red zone offense. We still have a lot of work to do."

In the last 4 meetups with the Chiefs, the Broncos have won 3 times. It is always nice to know a statistical trend, but I guarantee the Chiefs will not allow the game to be won easily. They now have the goal of defeating their old rival in the division in their own stadium. It will be a tough game folks.

Broncos should have beaten the Redskins, but the "Skins" took the odds against them and used them to win the game. The Chiefs could do the same thing, and we fans do not want to see that. We all hope for a playoff wildcard game, and the Broncos cannot afford to lose to KC at all. If they do, the statistics will certainly be against them for the remainder of the season.

Should be a good game to watch and I am expecting the Broncos to really execute well and not botch the red zone opportunities.
