Eddie Royal - Special Teams Player of the Month

Eddie Royal will be named AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for October, the NFL informed the Broncos on Wednesday.

Royal's selection as AFC Special Teams Player of the Month is the first such award of his two-year NFL career. It marks the first time in club history that the Broncos have had multiple AFC Special Teams Player of the Month winners in the same year with kicker Matt Prater also earning that award in September.

During three October games, Royal returned eight punts for 134 yards with one touchdown and five kickoffs for 158 yards with one score to total 292 return yards and two return touchdowns.

On Monday Night Football at San Diego in Week 6, Royal became only the 11th player in NFL history to score a touchdown on both a kickoff and punt return in the same game.

Broncos want savvy veteran at punter: Mitch Berger

By Lindsay H. Jones
The Denver Post

In Mitch Berger's 16 seasons in the NFL, he has punted for teams in the Southwest (Arizona), on the East Coast (Philadelphia), the Deep South (New Orleans) and Midwest (Minnesota and St. Louis) before finally ending up back in the Rocky Mountains, where he played at the University of Colorado in 1992 and 1993.

"It's full circle, and it's a chance to play where it really all started for me," Berger said Wednesday, two days after he was signed by the Broncos. "I grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia, and my first real experience outside of one year in junior college in Texas was here in Colorado. This is where I really started playing big-time football."

Recovered and Ready for Baltimore - Week 7

BRONCOS RETURN FROM BYE WEEK WITH VISIT TO BALTIMORE

The Denver Broncos (6-0) and Baltimore Ravens (3-3) both return from their bye weeks on Sunday when they face off against each other at M&T Bank Stadium at 1 p.m. EST.

QUICKLY:

  • Denver is 6-0 for the first time since 1998, and its six-game winning streak is the club’s longest since 2000 (6 games).
  • Head Coach Josh McDaniels is the fifth rookie coach in the Super Bowl era (since 1966) to begin his coaching career with a 6-0 record.
  • The Broncos have been one of the NFL’s best teams in the second half/overtime this year, outscoring opponents by a 76-10 margin.
  • Denver owns the NFL’s fourth-best record (15-5 / .750) following the bye week since it was introduced by the league in 1990.

OFFENSE:

  • QB Kyle Orton is 9-1 in his previous 10 starts dating back to last year and ranks third among active quarterbacks in career winning percentage (.692 / 27-12). He leads the NFL in touchdown-to-interception ratio (9-to-1), lowest interception percentage (0.5%) and fourth-quarter passer rating (142.1).
  • RBs Correll Buckhalter (3rd, 4.3%) and Knowshon Moreno (5th, 6.1%) both rank among the NFL’s top five players in avoiding rushes for negative yardage. As a team, Denver leads the league in lowest percentage of rushes going for negative yardage (4.4% / 8-of-181 / excludes kneeldowns).

DEFENSE:

  • Coached by long-time NFL defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, the Broncos lead the NFL in scoring defense (11.0) and third-down percentage (26.9%) while ranking second in the league in yards per game allowed (262.5 ypg.) and yards per play allowed (4.4).
  • OLB/DE Elvis Dumervil leads the NFL with 10 sacks. He tied as the second-fastest player (6 games) to reach 10 sacks since they became an official statistic in 1982 (fastest since Michael Strahan, NYG, in 2001, 6 gms.).

SPECIAL TEAMS:

  • WR Eddie Royal became only the 11th player in NFL history to score a touchdown on a kickoff (93 yds.) and a punt return (71 yds.) in the same game at San Diego on Oct. 19. He joins Cleveland’s Joshua Cribbs as one of two players in the NFL’s top 10 in both punt and kickoff return average.
  • P Mitch Berger, a 16-year NFL veteran and two-time Pro Bowl choice, was signed on Monday. Since 1999, he ranks fifth in the league in gross (43.4 yds.) and net (36.6 yds.) punting average (min. 500 punts).

Bye Week for the Broncos - 6 and 0 is just fine

Vikings and Broncos: Unlikely Heroes

These two teams lead their divisions by the widest margins in the league. Considering how many people had the Chargers (now iffy) and the Bears (still a potential contender) picked as division winners before the season, this has to be making some prognosticators panic.

The Vikings have been very lucky to make it this far. Lost in the glittering record are some inconvenient truths: Brett Favre has only out-thrown the opposing quarterback thrice; Adrian Peterson has only reached the 100-yard rushing mark twice; Aaron Rodgers and Joe Flacco have put up 384 and 385 yards respectively against Minnesota’s defense.

Three of the six teams Minnesota defeated go by the names of Cleveland, Detroit and St. Louis. Those three teams are a combined 2-16 this season. Of the others, two were under dubious circumstances. The San Francisco game was lost but for a prayer, and that was with the 49ers missing star rusher Frank Gore for most of the it. (If you want proof of what happens when he can’t keep his team’s defense off the field, re-watch the Atlanta game.) The Baltimore game came down to Frank Walker committing the exact same pass interference penalty, a modified neck-hug of sorts on the receiver, twice.

Broncos Great Play in Game 1 - Got it all started

Here is the video of the great play that got it all started in game 1 against the Bengals. What a game this was, and most of us thought we had lost it. Boy were we wrong.

Since then, they have won 5 more games and somehow they have actually been playing better each week. This game 1 play won it for them, but no such miracles happened in the next 5 games. Just good football.

Big Broncos - Now will they get Respect?

I keep seeing this stuff on websites and blogs about how the Denver Broncos are a fluke this year. Lucky, fortunate, hapless winners and all that crap. Amazing the attitude of NFC pundits who just assume their favorite teams will always win. When another team makes the grade, they are not willing to give the credit.

Did you listen to the ESPN guys during the game last night? They were all about the Chargers until the 3rd quarter. I was happy to hear them praising Eddie Royal for his 2 amazing touchdowns. I wondered if they would say anything at all. They came to announce the game and see the Chargers win the game.

It just didn't go their way did it?

Apparently McDaniels has a winning coaching methodology, and you can see it not only on the field, but after the game as well. All the players are acting much more professional in their comments and demeanor during interviews. McDaniels is training them to be winners, but humble and thankful winners. Don't you think this is a good thing for these young guys? I see so much difference in all of them, especially Brandon Marshall.

6 and 0 Denver Broncos - Beat the Chargers 34 to23 Yahoo

Amazing and astounding is all I can say about the performance of the Broncos in this most important division rivalry. All Broncos in the 2nd half, All Broncos at the end - W

As usual, the first quarter was pretty great, but they made a few little mistakes. Phillip Rivers was strutting around and the network announcers were all about the Chargers. Slowly, as the game went on they got quiet, just like the crowd.

Really, the Chargers lead at the half by 3 or so, but the 2nd half was all Broncos. Superior play action at every play. Elvis Dumervil was sacking Rivers over and over, and Marshall was doing his part with some good gains, while some other players took the glory in the end zone tonight.

The real big star of the evening is Eddie Royal. He returned a kickoff for a touchdown, and a punt for a touchdown too, allowing Eddie to give all Denver Bronco fans the Royal Treatment.

Broncos at Chargers: Second Half Live Blog

October 19th, 2009 - 8:22pm by Gray CaldwellOther posts by Gray Caldwell

Q3 14:56: The Broncos receive the kickoff to start the second half, and the offense takes over at the 26-yard line after Eddie Royal’s kickoff return. On first down, Knowshon Moreno is wrapped up near the line of scrimmage for no gain. Second down brings a deep pass from Kyle Orton intended for Tony Scheffler, but it is broken up. Flag on the play — pass interference on the defense. That sets up a first down on the Denver 45-yard line.

Q3 13:50: After a six-yard gain on a pass from Orton to Scheffler, Moreno finds a hole for a gain close to the first-down marker — it sets up 3rd-and-1. The handoff goes to Moreno, and there’s no indication whether it’s a first down or not — there are flags all over the field. Two fouls. Illegal shift on the offense, which is declined, and delay of game on the offense for spiking the ball after the play. It’s fourth down, and Brett Kern is in to punt. Darren Sproles is back at his own 10-yard line ready to return. The punt sails into the end zone for a touchback.

Q3 12:34: Brian Dawkins is back in the secondary and Mario Haggan is back in at linebacker as the defense trots onto the field. Andra Davis makes the tackle on first down as LaDainian Tomlinson picks up three yards. On second down, Rivers is nearly sacked by Dumervil before throwing a ball intended for Chris Chambers that falls incomplete. Two flags on the play, both on the Broncos. A holding call on Haggan makes it 1st-and-10 for the Chargers at their own 28-yard line.

Q3 11:40: Philip Rivers is hit in the backfield as he lets go of an incomplete pass. On second down, he finds his fullback Mike Tolbert on a screen pass that picks up 18 yards and a first down.

Q3 10:05: Dawkins and Elvis Dumervil snuff a LaDainian Tomlinson run after just a yard on first down, but Rivers comes back and completes a pass to Chambers for another first down at the Denver 37-yard line.

Q3 8:45: Another one-yard Tomlinson run comes on first down. That’s followed up by an incompletion by Rivers intended for Chambers with Andre’ Goodman in coverage. That makes it 3rd-and-9, and Rivers swings a pass out to Sproles, who is taken down by Wesley Woodyard after a gain of four. On 4th-and-5, Nate Kaeding is in to line up for a 50-yard field goal attempt. He drives it through the uprights, and the Chargers extend their lead by another three points.

CHARGERS 23, BRONCOS 17

Q3 7:57: Eddie Royal is back deep to receive. An update on his performance so far — he’s in fact the second Bronco to return both a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns in the same game. It also happened in the Broncos’ inaugural season, 1960. Back to today’s game — Royal takes it out to the 23-yard line, where the offense will take over on the other side of the TV timeout.

Q3 7:51: Orton finds Brandon Marshall for a 15-yard gain on first down, moving the ball to the 38-yard line. On the next play, Orton backs up into the shotgun and fires toward Tony Scheffler — good for a five-yard gain. 2nd-and-5 brings a pitch to Correll Buckhalter and a first down after the 11-yard gain.

Q3 6:04: A long pass intended for Marshall falls incomplete, but a completion to Scheffler on the following play sets up another first down for the Broncos at the San Diego 34-yard line. Buckhalter runs for five more yards on first down, followed by a one-yard gain by Moreno. On 3rd-and-4, Orton backs up into the shotgun with three receivers out wide. He fires to Marshall, who drags his defender for a first down.

Q3 3:45: On 1st-and-10, Orton pump fakes then fires to Scheffler in the end zone for a touchdown. It’s quite a catch by Scheffler — the replay shows the tight end got both feet in bounds as he dove to make the catch. Prater’s extra point is good, and the long drive puts the Broncos back on top.

BRONCOS 24, CHARGERS 23

Q3 3:43 The touchdown drive spanned nine plays for 77 yards, taking 4:14 off the game clock. Now Prater is on the field to kick off, and it’s fielded by Sproles. Darcel McBath took down the returner with a big hit at the 26-yard line.

Q3 3:39: A 17-yard Tomlinson run gave the Chargers another first down, and he followed it up with a seven-yard run and a run for no gain. On 3rd-and-3, Rivers drops back and is sacked almost immediately by Dumervil. The sack also forces a fumble, which is recovered by Vonnie Holliday, giving the Broncos offense the ball at the San Diego 47-yard line.

Q3 1:05: A pitch to Moreno goes for no gain on first down, followed by a pass aimed at Jabar Gaffney that was broken up at the last moment. It’s now 3rd-and-10 for the Broncos at the San Diego 47-yard line. Orton buys time, but coverage forces him to scramble forward for a quick chunk of yards. There’s a flag on the play, however — holding on the defense. It’s five yards and an automatic first down.

Q3 0:10: A quick pass out to Brandon Marshall nets nine yards on the run after the catch, and a handoff to Moreno on second down goes for a loss of a yard as the quarter comes to a close. The Broncos will have a 3rd-and-2 at the 26-yard line on the other side of the break.

START OF FOURTH QUARTER: Orton drops back and finds a wide-open Marshall for the first down. Now 1st-and-10 at the 17-yard line, Orton hands off to Buckhalter, and he’s stopped after a gain of one yard.

Q4 13:50: With Orton in the shotgun, Buckhalter catches a pass out of the backfield for a five-yard gain on second down. That sets up a 3rd-and-4 at the 11-yard line. Orton is in teh shtogun with Buckhalter to his right. Three receivers are out wide. Orton takes the snap, drops back and fires for a diving Royal — but the pass falls incomplete. Prater is on the field for a 29-yard field goal attempt — and it’s good, extending the Broncos’ lead.

BRONCOS 27, CHARGERS 23

Q4 13:05: That was a 10-play scoring drive by the Broncos. That’s two consecutive long drives strung together by the offense. Now the Chargers offense is on the field, and Rivers tries to set up a screen pass to Tomlinson. The defense sniffs it out, most notably Haggan, who drills the running back for a loss of four.

Q4 12:17: An incomplete pass by Rivers intended for Vincent Jackson sets up 3rd-and-14 for the Chargers at their own 23-yard line. Rivers is in the shotgun and he’s sacked by Dumervil for the second time today. That brings in Mike Scifres for the punt, with Royal back deep to receive. He tries to find the sideline but is brought down after a short gain at the 29-yard line, where the offense will take over on the other side of a TV timeout.

Q4 11:36: Orton takes the snap from under center on first down, handing off to Buckhalter. The running back finds a big hole and picks up 15 yards for a first down.

Q4 11:26: After an injury timeout for the Chargers, Buckhalter finds room for a six-yard gain on first down. With the ball at midfield, the Broncos have a 2nd-and-4, and it’s a handoff to Buckhalter. The ball comes loose, and there’s a pile to recover the fumble — Ben Hamilton comes away with it after quickly diving on the ball. After the scramble for the ball, it’s 3rd-and-1 for the Broncos — actually a three-yard gain in the end.

BRONCOS TIMEOUT

Q4 9:51: On 3rd-and-1, Peyton Hillis is in at fullback blocking for Moreno. Moreno leaps in the air and dives forward toward the first-down marker — and the refs are calling for a measurement. It’s a first down, and the cheers from the crowd are louder than the boos. Not sure if that’s because Chargers fans were confused, or Broncos fans are taking over. Either one is possible.

Q4 9:29: Big tackle by the Chargers on first down — a pitch to Moreno that looked like could go for a big gain is just a gain of two. On second down, Moreno takes a handoff just as the play clock was nearing zero and picks up five yards. It’s 3rd-and-3, and Orton takes the snap from under center. He tries to find a diving Royal again, but the pass is a little low and hits the ground. That sets up 4th-and-3 for the Broncos at the 39-yard line — and Kern is in to punt.

CHARGERS TIMEOUT

Q4 8:00: Kern’s punt bounces at about the 3-yard line before heading into the end zone for a touchback. The Chargers take over on their own 20-yard line. On first down, D.J. Williams blitzes into the backfield late and gets to Rivers for a sack and a forced fumble — but Rivers recovers his own fumble on the way down to the ground. That makes it 2nd-and-21 at the 9-yard line — and Rivers completes it to Vincent Jackson for a 17-yard gain. Now it’s 3rd-and-4 for San Diego.

Q4 6:27: A pass interference call on Andre’ Goodman on a deep pass intended for Jackson gives the Chargers a first down at the Denver 40-yard line. Haggan and Dawkins take down Sproles after a two-yard gain on the following play. On second down, Rivers drops back and is hit by Andra Davis as he lets go of the ball — so the pass falls harmlessly to the ground, incomplete. That sets up 3rd-and-8, and Rivers is in the shotgun. He tries to get it to Malcom Floyd, but Champ Bailey was in tight coverage and the pass sails high.

Q4 5:45: At the Denver 38-yard line, the Chargers elect to go for it on 4th-and-8. Rivers is in the shotgun and fires toward Floyd — but it’s broken up by Bailey and D.J. Williams. Turnover on downs.

Q4 4:54: The cornerback tried to jump an Orton pass to Scheffler, and paid the price. Scheffler turned back in field after the catch and sprinted all the way up field to the 8-yard line. It’s a 52-yard gain, and the Broncos have a first-and-goal.

Q4 3:00: Two consecutive Moreno runs sets up a third-and-goal at the 5-yard line. Orton drops back into the shotgun with three receivers to the left. He fires the ball to Brandon Stokley, who snags the catch and rolls into the end zone for the touchdown. San Diego head coach Norv Turner throws in the red challenge flag because the defense believes they touched Stokley down at the 1-yard line.

Q4 2:55 The ruling is upheld, and Stokley’s touchdown stands. Prater’s extra point is up and through the uprights — and the Broncos now hold an 11-point lead.

BRONCOS 34, CHARGERS 23

Q4 2:48 Darrell Reid makes the stop on Sproles at the 23-yard line, where the Chargers offense takes over. Rivers passes to Antonio Gates in the middle of the field — a quick six-yard gain. It looks like the Chargers are electing for a hurry-up offense, and Rivers steps up in the pocket to find Chris Chambers for a 17-yard gain and a first down. They hurry up to the line againand Rivers finds Jackson for another first down at the Denver 36-yard line as the clock winds down to the two-minute warning.

Q4 1:59 Gates catches a pass for another first down at the 25-yard line, and the Chargers hurry back up to the line as the clock continues to tick. Rivers avoids pressure and moves out of the pocket, eyeing a receiver running toward the end zone — actually it was Tomlinson — but Wesley Woodyard’s coverage is right there, and the linebacker almost comes away with the interception in addition to the pass breakup.

Q4 1:15: The Broncos defense continues to swarm — Reid sacks Rivers and forces a fumble — but the Chargers recover it. It’s an 11-yard loss, and San Diego is forced to use its final timeout.

Broncos and Charger- Game 6 Monday Night

The Broncos head back on the road in Week 6 after playing two consecutive games at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

San Diego is the destination, where the team will take on the Chargers on Monday Night Football.

"A division game is always a little bit bigger because you play them twice and you are more familiar with them," Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. "It is only our sixth game. It is not going to determine the outcome of our season, but we know how important each one of these division games is going to be. We have got five left. This is our first one against San Diego and our second one on the road. This is an extremely important game for our football team."

The team knows it is in for a battle in all three phases of the game if it wants to make it to the bye week without a loss. The key comes down to execution.

"Ball security is going to be an issue. Blocking the blitz is going to be an issue. Finding some space to throw outside on the corners this week is going to be an issue," McDaniels said.

"We know we have got our hands full."

The game, with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. MDT, will be broadcast nationally on ESPN and locally on My 20 Denver (KDVT). Stick with DenverBroncos.com for continuing coverage throughout the contest.

Can the Broncos beat the Chargers?

Remember the game with the Chargers last year? It was a bad show for sure, but this year the team is coming off some really great wins and should be able to stop LT. Still, there is the psychological side of the thing; Broncos know they need to win the game to return to a respectable position with their division rival. Broncos have lost the last 5 of 6 games against the chargers. No matter how well you are playing, the Chargers present a different set of issues for them. I am not sure how to predict this one. Could go either way couldn't it?

Chargers forced into a must win game ....

The AFC West was supposed to be San Diego’s for the taking this year.

The three-time defending division-champion Chargers came into the season as the only team among the four in the division that didn’t appear to have a plethora of issues.

Yet, five weeks into the season, it’s the Denver Broncos who are in position to run away with the title.

The Broncos (5-0) visit the Chargers (2-2) on Monday night and with a win would take a 31/2-game lead on their rivals.

“We all know that,” Broncos tight end Daniel Graham said. “It’s a must-win for them; it’s a must-win for us, as well. We want to go into the bye week with a great record.”

San Diego is coming off its bye week, and the Chargers went into their off week reeling.

“It was obviously badly needed,” Chargers coach Norv Turner said. “I think it helped us regroup a little bit after the first four weeks. continue reading here

Broncos News and Talk from Around the Web

Over the past three weeks, the Kyle Orton-to-Brandon Marshall combination has struck for 222 yards and four touchdowns as the Broncos have pushed their record to 5-0.

Kyle Orton and Brandon Marshall are quite a combination, and are now being talked about more than ever across the sports writer's network. Stats are very interesting, and this bit on USA Today is all about some comparisons of Orton to past Denver QBs.

"On the passing front, Kyle Orton has acquitted himself very well as a Bronco, passing for the sixth-most yards and sixth-highest rating of any Denver QB in the season's first five games. The man Orton replaced, Jay Cutler, threw for a record 1,502 yards in Denver's first 5 games last season, but Orton isn't far behind, posting a 1,236 total that trails only Cutler, three John Elway campaigns, and Frank Tripucka's 1962 start.

Orton's 97.4 QB rating is also within striking distance of Cutler's 98.1 mark from '08, as both trail Bubby Brister (111.3), Craig Morton (106.7), Brian Griese (104.3) and John Elway (103.0) for the top-rated starts in franchise history."

One great reference for football stats is Pro-Football-Reference.com. Armed with the numbers, you can make a case for what the Broncos are doing this year. It is a great reference site, and fairly easy to use and comprehend too.

Foe's Long Drive Tees off Defense (boston Herald)

"Twice during Sunday’s loss to the Broncos, the Patriots [team stats] allowed drives of 90 yards or longer. Both took more than 4 1/2 minutes and both succeeded in wearing down the defense.

“We certainly can’t let people drive the length of the field on us,” defensive coordinator Dean Pees said yesterday."

Chargers Scouting Report - North County Times

Player to watch - WR Brandon Marshall

"The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Marshall has been a force this season after an ominous offseason and preseason that included demands for a new contract, legal issues and a suspension for conduct detrimental to the team. But he has since put his energy into his on-field exploits and proven himself to be an elite receiver. Marshall already has 24 catches for 283 yards and four touchdowns, including a game-winner against Dallas in Week 4. Marshall's career day came against the Chargers last season, when he abused the secondary ---- especially CB Antonio Cromartie ---- for 18 receptions, 166 yards and a touchdown. Marshall is a big, physical threat who can cause real trouble when he has time to find holes in the secondary."

I heard on the news last night here in Denver that Pat Bowlen is going to be giving Marshall a Raise. That is all the media knew then, and I am sure details will follow. I bet he is glad he was forced to stay on now. Imagine if they had traded him? We would not be 5 and 0. Have to give credit where credit is due. It's a team, but he is a dynamic member of it.

Denver Broncos Musterd and Brown Uniforms - Throwback Uniforms from the old AFL

Broncos wear throwback uniforms to celebrate AFL anniversary

Broncos wear throwback uniforms to celebrate AFL anniversary

The uniforms were replicas of the ones the team wore in it's first season, 1960. The throwbacks were used to commemerate the 50th anniversary of the AFL.

They uniforms have a history. They were so disliked, and the team played so badly in them, that they were publicly burned a year later.

Legend has it, that the uniforms were actually bought used, so the original owners could save money.

And when the NFL introduced the retro jerseys this summer, the first one they made was for Jay Cutler, who was shipped out of town.

Denver Broncos for Real - 5 and 0 - Beat the Pats

Nothing could have prepared me for the current state of affairs after the first 5 games of the 2009 season in the NFL. I wish I could have seen into the future and I would have traveled to Las Vegas and placed some big bets on the Broncos, and would have won big money. Of course, who would have done that?

Now we all have to sit up and admit that perhaps Josh McDaniels has a winning methodology to his coaching plan. There must be something real to this whole thing, and I have to swallow my pride and admit that I was wrong about the coaching change back in the spring.

Here's the AP short on the Broncos today:

The Denver Broncos are reminding their fans of Super Bowl seasons past with their 5-0 start. The Dallas Cowboys are just relieved their season hasn't completely fallen apart heading into their bye week.

Kyle Orton led a 98-yard drive in the fourth quarter to tie the score and Matt Prater kicked a 41-yard field goal in overtime Sunday to lift Denver to a 20-17 victory over the New England Patriots.

"The electricity in the stadium was so great that we had to have it," Orton said. "When we got to overtime, we just had to win."

Josh McDaniels got a win over his old boss, Bill Belichick, and the Broncos opened the season with five wins for the first time since 1998, their last Super Bowl season.

At Kansas City, Mo., Miles Austin caught 10 passes for a franchise-record 250 yards and scored the winning touchdown in overtime, lifting the Cowboys to a 26-20 victory against the winless Chiefs.

Austin topped the record of 246 yards that Hall of Famer "Bullet" Bob Hayes set against Washington almost 39 years ago, and helped send the Chiefs (0-5) to their 28th loss in 30 games.

"It's a feeling that's unbelievable," he said. "It's amazing. I never seen that coming today. I was ready today, but you never expect a huge game like that."

Austin's tackle-breaking 59-yard catch-and-run from Tony Romo gave the mistake-prone Cowboys (3-2) a 20-13 lead with 2:16 left. Then after Matt Cassel's 16-yard TD pass to Dwayne Bowe tied it 20-20 with 24 seconds to go in regulation, Austin got free on a 60-yard scoring play on Dallas' second possession in overtime.

Orton threw for 330 yards and two scores and the Broncos held New England (3-2) scoreless in the second half.

Denver's fourth-quarter drive certainly wasn't "The Drive" — Elway's classic, 98-yard march that helped beat the Browns 23-20 back in the 1987 AFC title game — but it will go down as one of the best in this franchise's history.

Trailing 17-10 with 9:59 left, Orton was at his patient best during the game-tying drive that started at the 2. A 14-yard completion to Jabar Gaffney, a screen to Knowshon Moreno who sprung for 27. A 7-yard completion to Eddie Royal, who finished with 10 catches for 90 yards.

Brandon Marshall, who scored the game-winner last week against Dallas, did the honors this time, too, catching a pass on the sideline, then spinning and breaking a tackle for an 11-yard score that tied it at 17. It was his second touchdown of the game.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady went 19 for 33 for 215 yards, but only 63 of those came in the second half.

The teams traded a pair of possessions around midfield to close regulation, then the Broncos won the toss and drove 58 yards to set up the winning field goal with 10:09 left in OT.

Man the Bookies must be going crazy over this deal

Can a Sage beat the Master? Broncos and Patriots Today!

Since Josh McDaniels came to Denver just a few months ago, he has taken lots of criticism from many fans and sports bloggers (me included) but through a dedication to football fundamentals the Denver Broncos have held some pretty good teams from victory, including the Cowboys last Sunday. Now comes the New England Patriots to Mile High Stadium today at 2:15, and yet another test comes. This one is somewhat different of course, since this is McDaniel's old team, and coach.

Josh credits the Pats and their coach with all the praise and skill they deserve, and he is not over confident whatsoever. However, despite his humility I know Josh McDaniels wants to win this game today. He and the Broncos are going to be living the strategies he learned and taught at New England just one year ago. Now the 2 meet, sage and master, and we will all see the way it goes down. Belichick and McDaniels head to head.

Brady will be contending with the best corner in the game, and if there is anyone who can interfere with the Brady/Moss connection, it is Champ Baily. Running game? They both have one. Changing formations? They both have them. They both have all the bells and whistles!

Who will win? Sage or Master? Broncos or Patriots? McDaniels or Bllichick? It is all in the future (less than one hour from now) so Be There.

Denver Broncos and New England Patriots

Great stuff from the Broncos Website
www.denverbroncos.com

The Broncos are at home on Sunday, playing their second consecutive game at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

This week, the Boston Patriots come to town as part of the NFL's celebration of the 50th anniversary of the AFL. The Legacy Game, as it is designated, pits the 4-0 Broncos against the 3-1 Patriots.

"Film work and preparation this week will be big for us," Brandon Stokley said, discussing the challenges the Patriots present in all three phases of the game.

The Broncos know that in order to leave the field Sunday with a 5-0 record, they will have to execute better than the talented team lining up across from them, led by Tom Brady.

"Every week, it is hard to get wins in this league -- you can't take them for granted," Daniel Graham said. "Coach has done a great job preparing us each week and we're looking forward to doing it again this week."

The game, with kickoff scheduled for 2:15 p.m. MDT, will be broadcast on CBS4 (KCNC-TV). Stick with DenverBroncos.com for continuing coverage throughout the contest.

The game is presented by Comcast. Comcast generously provided throwback yellow T-shirts and license plate frames to fans in attendance at the game on Sunday.

Broncos RB Buckhalter injures left ankle

Broncos RB Buckhalter injures left ankle but says, 'I'll be all right'

running back Correll Buckhalter injured his left ankle during the third quarter of Sunday's 17-10 victory over the Dallas Cowboys and left the locker room afterward on crutches.

"I'll be all right," said Buckhalter, who wouldn't elaborate about his injury.

Buckhalter, who spent his previous eight NFL seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, hurt the ankle on a sweep play. He finished the game with 37 yards on six carries, and he also had five catches for 55 yards.

Rookie Knowshon Moreno, the No. 12 overall pick in the April draft, took Buckhalter's place and had 65 yards on 14 carries and added a 9-yard touchdown catch. He might have a bigger role in the offense if Buckhalter is down for a while.

"Whatever they ask me to do, really," Moreno said. "We still have LaMont (Jordan) and some other guys who can come in and do the job also. We don't know how bad it (Buckhalter's injury) is, but we're just going to keep moving."

Moreno Rookie of the Week? Send your vote!

For the 2nd week, Knowshon Moreno has been nominated for the Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Week Award.

Moreno led the Broncos with 14 carries for 65 yards in Sunday’s 17-10 victory over the Cowboys. He leads all NFL rookies with 249 rushing yards this season.

Vote for Moreno here through this Friday’s 10 a.m. MDT deadline.

Moreno added two catches for 11 yards against Dallas, including a nine-yard touchdown reception. That catch was the first receiving score of his career, and makes him the only rookie in the NFL to post a rushing touchdown and receiving touchdown this season.

Moreno led all NFL rookies in yards per rush (4.6) during Week 4 and was one of four NFL players to not have a rush for negative yardage. He is up against Colts wide receiver Austin Collie, Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis, Bears wide receiver Johnny Knox and Browns wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi for the award.

So come out and vote here through the Friday deadline.

Cool Bronco Quotes from Recent Sports Articles

“I think everybody that’s been here is used to seeing that and knows that’s the B-Marsh we’re all used to, out there making plays,” Broncos tight end Tony Scheffler said. “Anything can happen when he touches the ball. When he gets the ball in his hands, it’s electric.”

“I’m not going to comment on where he was (before the season), but he is one of us,” McDaniels said of Marshall. “Our team loves him, we love him and I think he loves being a part of this team.”

“I give Dallas credit,” McDaniels said. “They forced a lot of mistakes in the first part of the half, but our team stayed with it and made some adjustments at halftime. They never stopped playing hard and gave a great effort the whole time, and made enough plays to win it in the end.”

“Wins are hard to come by in the league, and when you get one, you’re really happy about that one,” Moreno said.

“It probably was one of my most emotional plays ever, since little league, and I had a bunch of them,” said Marshall, who caught four passes for 91 yards.

"Everyone wants the ball on offense, so you've got to spread it around," said Nolan, who's been a defensive coordinator for Baltimore, Washington, the Jets and the Giants. "On defense, it's a little bit of the same way when you play the 3-4: guys want their number called, where they get to blitz and get to do some of the fun things."

"I've been blessed to be in this situation," Dumervil said. "The defensive scheme is excellent."

"He may be a 35-year-old in age, but he's 22 in playing time," Haggan said. "He's that type of player — when you need big plays he delivers."

"I welcome it. Please do," Bailey said. "That's the only way that I get a chance to make plays."

"As soon as I caught it and hit the middle of the field, I thought I had a chance to score," Marshall said. "But the big body wasn't fast enough so I had to make some cuts to get to the end zone."

Well there it is, some various team member and coach quotes from around the web today. The one article I thought was funny was the one about how Tony Romo apparently did not realize he was tossing his last pass on 4th down, as he was seen holding up 3 fingers at the official on the field - good grief man, could that be true?

Let's not forget the defense in Sunday's game ok?

Some sports writers are mentioning it, and some are kind of glossing over it, but it needs to be emphasized that the Defense also helped win that game against Dallas on Sunday.

Two really big things happened at the end, in the last 2 minutes or so. Brandon Marshall caught a pass and literally dodged 5 or 6 Cowboys directly in his path to get into the end zone. It was a thing of beauty!

Then, this Denver Defense, which reminds me of the old Orange Crush in the late 70's, stood their ground and did not allow a touchdown from inside the 5 yard line. Romo was unable to get a pass or run in at that time.

I just want to make sure everyone understands that the defense more than just did their job. They were Amazing. It also was a thing of beauty!

Can this really be happening? Denver Broncos 4 and 0?

I feel like I am in a dream that I can't wake up from. The Broncos are now 4 and 0 on the new season, which is 1/4 of the regular season games. Amazing to say the least. Remember in the spring when all the controversy was brewing? I for one was very critical of all the soap opera drama going on, but even I can change my mind and slowly, that is happening.

Apparently McDaniels has a good plan for attacking the NFL teams he is facing, and the Bronco players are behind him. If they weren't with him right at first, they are now. Can you imagine the uplifted spirit the team has now?

I have been trying to find a video of the "HUG", which happened twice by the way. Once on the field, and then again in the Press Conference after the game. I did not imagine anything like this taking place.

Well the Broncos will have much more confidence to face New England next Sunday, and thank goodness it will be happening right here in Mile High Stadium. Having the fans and being at home will make it harder on Brady and his crew to hear the calls.

Broncos have a mission now!

Broncos Win Again - Denver Broncos Lead the AFC West

I have to hand it to them today. After a terrible first half, the Broncos came back out and got serious. Amazing and astounding to see that touchdown and extra point with what, 2 minutes left or so? Then, the Cowboys could not get in the end zone!

Broncos Defense deserves a hat's off man

Brandon Marshall totaled 91 yards on four grabs and had the go-ahead 51-yard score with 1:46 remaining in the game for the Broncos (4-0). They also got a TD catch from Knowshon Moreno, who totaled 65 yards on 14 carries.

Even though the team drew several penalties in the first half, defense recorded five sacks, an interception and a forced fumble in the triumph.

Dallas QB Tony Romo tallied 255 yards on 25-of-42 passing with an interception and, for the first time in his career, was held without a touchdown pass for the second consecutive game.

Marshall caught a ball about 15 yards downfield and cut towards midfield. As he got to the hash marks, he cut back towards the right sideline and dashed 51 yards into the end zone to give the Broncos a 17-10 lead with 1:46 showing on the clock.

Very exciting football, and now when they meet up with New England, the Broncos will have the confidence they need to win. 4 and 0 is an amazing record for the Broncos after such a massive rebuilding and personell shuffling as they did.

You cannot argue with success!

Broncos facing the Cowboys Tomorrow

Here's a good article by Kim at Predominantly Orange

We’ve seen this kind of 3-0 start before only to have the rest of the season crumble before our eyes. Something tells me that this year is different for the Broncos. A true test comes into town from the Big D. ”America’s Team” may have a venue that belongs on MTVs Cribs: Stadium Edition, but the Broncos have rocky mountain thunder and the mile high air on their side. The Cowboys (2-1) only loss comes from NFC East divisional rival, the NY Giants. Great things are expected out of the Cowboys this season. With the release of T.O., the team became a more cohesive unit. However ....... continue reading here
