Recent Bronco News Headlines

Do you suppose Brandon Marshall will finally just settle down and play football and be part of the team? As far as a fan can tell, he gets along well with the other guys, so why not? After 3 and 0 on the early season, he would have to be crazy to leave now. I think he may have already decided to put all that crap on hold. I sure hope so anyway!

Dumervil Reaches Higher In New Broncos Defense

Everyone is singing the praises of the new Broncos at 3 and 0 on the season. Here is a bit from CBS4 Denver:

Vic Lombardi says, "This is not an average sized arm," - "You're looking at 32 inches in length."

Dumervil says he uses the long arms to his benefit when he gets underneath the offensive lineman. His impressive leverage was on display on Sunday in the new 3-4 defense the team is running.

"As a rusher the first thing you want to do is get off the ball, and from there you've got to go with the flow -- whatever the offensive tackle gives you you pretty much take," Dumervil said.

Show host Champ Bailey said Dumervil is showing his versatility. He said the transition from a full-time defensive lineman to a hybrid defensive end-outside linebacker came naturally for Dumervil.

"Now he's the guy that can put his hand on the ground and play defensive end and he's the guy that can stand up and drop back in coverage when he has to," Bailey said. "He dropped back in coverage on Sunday and caused a fumble."

The amazing thing I noticed after game 3 is that Josh McDaniels took his cap off for the press conference !!!!

Up till now I always see him with his ball cap on - significant?

Knowshon Moreno is nominated for the Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Week after his 21-carry, 90-yard, one-touchdown performance on Sunday. His teammate in the backfield, Correll Buckhalter, is nominated for the FedEx Ground Player of the Week after notching his first 100-yard rushing game as a Bronco, finishing with 14 carries for 108 yards.

Moreno is nominated along with Donald Brown of the Indianapolis Colts, Percy Harvin of the Minnesota Vikings, Mark Sanchez of the New York Jets and Matthew Stafford of the Detroit Lions. To vote for Moreno click here.

Buckhalter is up against New Orleans’ Pierre Thomas and Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew. Buckhalter’s 108 rushing yards marked the second-highest total in the AFC for the week, and the fifth 100-yard rushing game of his career. To vote for Buckhalter click here.

Broncos Win Game 3 - Excitment Builds in Denver

The highly touted Raiders had home field advantage, but they could not make things work very well all game. Broncos offense was effective and Orten made no big blunders. Defense again worked hard to stop the opposing team, and they did.

Against a supposedly fearsome Raiders front foursome, the Broncos ran off yardage in chunks. Correll Buckhalter got his first 100-yard rushing game and running back Knowshon Moreno added 90 yards. The passing game was a series of clear out routes with quarterback Kyle Orton efficiently connecting on the drag pattern underneath.

Kicker Matt Prater was 5-for-5 in kickoffs reaching the end zone 3-for-3 in field goals. Punter Brett Kern was 0-for-0 in punts until midway through the fourth quarter, when he finally had to boot. Special, indeed.

Renaldo Hill and Andre Goodman had interceptions, Brian Dawkins recovered a fumble, and Jabar Gaffney caught four passes. Even Brandon Marshall, who has let it be known he would rather be playing elsewhere, contributed to the cause, catching a 2-yard touchdown pass to start the scoring.

"We have the attitude that we want to win and we're going to do whatever it takes," stated Denver Broncos defensive back Champ Bailey about his teammates in the secondary. "Our chemistry has definitely come along faster than expected. We understand each other. We're veterans, so we don't expect anything else."

With the exception of the occasional struggle in finishing off a slew of first-and-goal situations, the Broncos' performance was clinical. With this kind of performance, and with the Broncos improving each week, it is concievable they could beat the Cowboys next week. After that the Patriots are in the wings, so they have their work cut out.

Amazing day. The Rockies won game 3 with the Cards, and are 2 1/2 games ahead in the wild card race. It has been a great day for our teams.

Josh McDaniels created a completely new defense for Broncos

This guy came in and decided to toss out the old defensive formations and schemes, and rebuilt one of his own. He hired Mike Nolan as defensive coordinator and Mike brought the new 3-4 formation.

So far this defensive formation has worked very well, and is making Denver a respected team again, as they lead the league in several stats (points allowed (6.5) and yards per game (253.5).

I know there is more to it than just this one thing, but before Mike Shanahan got the boot, the Denver defense was little more than a joke in the sports world. All I, or anyone can say at this point is that McDaniels did the right thing.

I am not a big fan of the way Josh handled the team, the media and the players last spring, but at this point I have to admit he seems to know what he is doing. I just hope the Brandon Marshall controversy goes away and he can fit in and play every week.

One of the most amazing aspects of last Sunday's game was the performance of Elvis Dumervil. That was his first day in the Outside Linebacker slot, and he was outstanding with 4 sacks on the day.

Can we now say that McDaniels and Nolan know what they are doing? Man I hope and pray for weekly improvements on offense and defense, and who knows how far they can go?

Look at the performance of Andra Davis, who has fit in to the team as well as anyone can. He leads the team with 19 tackles and isn't it simply astounding that 10 of those tackles were during the game with the Browns? That was his former team!

Let's give the team some credit and the coaches too. So far this thing is working, and I am the first to admit that I did not see it coming. Kudos to these guys for working hard on the new 3-4 scheme!

Broncos in first place at the end of weeK 2

Isn't it ironic that the Denver Broncos are in first place in the AFC West?

Well, at this point they totally deserve to be there. They are playing solid defense and pretty fair offense. When I say pretty fair, I am giving full credit to what they are doing in the running game and passing.

Running game is developing well, and this week we saw some outstanding performances from Denver's new running backs combined with McDaniel's program of stressing solid fundamentals.

The passing game has room for improvement, but I see Orten avoiding the sack, and that is a plus for the team. I still think Tom Brandstater is a better QB, but I guess we will be seeing Orten for awhile anyway.

I liked seeing Marshall having to eat some humble pie for a time, sitting on the sidelines. But when he did get in there he performed well. I have to admit the team looks good at this point, and I will keep my criticism to a minimum while they lay the foundation.

I am much more impressed with the commander style this coach has then I thought I would be. So there it is for now. Here's the order in the AFC West right now!

Great Win for the Broncos today

Wow, what a day of football and baseball. Our teams won today big time.

Broncos looked great for the most part, and Orton showed he can follow instructions and not lose yardage in a sack. He tossed it away several times today avoiding both the sack and the interception as well. I have to admit we have a good running game and a good defense as well.

Dummerville sacked Quinn 4 times. Both teams had a turnover resulting in a score to the other side, but Broncos came out on top. Lots of great running gains today by the Broncos and good execution overall all day long. Davis had 10 tackles on the day against his old team. Defense looks like a big star this year. If they keep this type of play up for several more games, they will get national attention.

I am surprised so far. I am not yet ready to release my position and say McDaniels is right in all his decisions, but I am kind of seeing him in a different light. While Marshall spent quite a bit of time on the bench, when he did play he made yardage and contributed to the win.

While he was on the sidelines once, Shannon Sharpe (who was inducted in the Ring of Fame) commented that the team should use their weapons. He said Marshall is an offensive weapon and if they want to win games, they have to use their weapons. Way to talk it up there Shannon. You worked that one in quite well.

Best record the Broncos could possibly have at this early point in the season. Shall we go for 3? I heard my guy Cutler has tossed some interceptions too, is that true? Well, Orton did not, but I still think Brandstater is the guy for the job at some point, either here or somewhere else. He will be a big factor in some team's history.

Good job Broncos, and McDaniels too! Broncos 27, Browns 6

Today is Game 2 - What about those Browns?

This week's matchup with the Browns gains even more importance because it is the club's home opener. INVESCO Field at Mile High will open its doors for the first regular season game of 2009, and the team is excited to kick off the home schedule on the right foot.

"It is a high priority for our team to start fast and play well here in front of our home crowd," Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. "Any time you can get the energy in the stadium at a fever pitch early in the game, it always helps your performance and makes it tougher on them."

And the Broncos will want to make it as tough as they can on the Browns, who pose challenges in all three phases of the game.

One of their biggest threats on special teams and offense is Joshua Cribbs. The main place Cribbs can take over a game is on kick and punt returns. In fact, McDaniels said the fifth-year returner is, in his opinion, "the best in the league."

"We are going to have a huge challenge with him because he is so dangerous, so explosive," McDaniels said. "If you are playing in tight games and that guy is back there returning kicks, it could be one play and that change the result of the game. (He is) one of the most dangerous players we will play all year, no doubt about it."

To that point, Cribbs scored his seventh career special teams touchdown last week in the second quarter on a 67-yard punt return.

But the threats on the Browns don't end there. Braylon Edwards has shown the ability to be a playmaker on offense at the receiver position, and Jamal Lewis has rushed for 1,000 yards both of the seasons he has spent with the Browns.

McDaniels said Lewis' physical style is what makes him so tough to stop.

"(He's) quick through the hole, if you give him a crease he can get through it and once he is into the secondary you have got to tackle him because he is a big guy," he said.

Former Brown Andra Davis said the team will have to make stopping Lewis a focal point, because stopping the run allows the defense to pin its ears back and go after the passer, as well.

The passer in this case is Brady Quinn, who made his first start in the NFL against the Broncos last season.

"Last time I was facing Denver it was tough considering it was only about a day and a half of preparation because we had a short week," Quinn said. "But I've continued to grow and mature not only in this offense but as a player in general."

Quinn earned the starting job to start the season, and threw for 205 yards, a touchdown and an interception in Week 1, just the fourth start of his career.

Brian Dawkins said preparing for an inexperienced quarterback like Quinn is no different than preparing for a veteran the likes of Tom Brady.

"You want to disrupt the quarterback," the safety said. "No matter if he has been in there for two years or 13 or eight or whatever, you want to disrupt. You don't want to sit back there and let him feel comfortable in the pocket. This week will be no different for us as a defense."

For the offense, it will hopefully be a game with a little more production on first and second downs throughout the contest. Stokley said the unit will look to limit its mistakes against a tough Browns defense that brings a variety of blitz packages.

Brandon Marshall said the Cleveland defense is "really physical, they're smart and they fly all around the field."

"I think (Browns Head) Coach (Eric) Mangini is doing a great job with the guys, just getting them to do what they're supposed to do, do their job, and it's making it tough on opposing offenses," Marshall said.

All in all, the Broncos will have to play well in all three phases of the game if they want to pick up their first win at INVESCO in 2009 and head into their first division matchup with a 2-0 record.

"It's going to be a challenge for us," Correll Buckhalter said. "But we're ready to face the challenge."

Shannon Sharpe to be recognized Sunday - Broncos Ring of Fame

At halftime of Sunday's 2009 home opener against Cleveland, Shannon Sharpe will take his rightful place among the organization's all-time greats when -- standing in front of Broncos Country -- he is honored as the 22nd inductee into the Broncos Ring of Fame.

While Sunday's ceremony will officially cement Sharpe into the Ring of Fame, the organization began celebrating No. 84's prolific career in orange and blue on Friday night. Surrounded by family and longtime friends alike, Sharpe was honored at the club's annual Alumni Reunion Dinner at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

"It's kind of hard to put into words," Sharpe said of the honor. "For the Broncos and Mr. Bowlen and the staff to think that my play on the field was worthy of this accomplishment, it's an unbelievable feeling. I'm humbled. I never imagined it, even in my wildest dreams."

A host of Broncos legends were on hand to pay tribute to Sharpe at the night's festivities. Eight Ring of Fame members -- Rich Jackson, Floyd Little, Billy Thompson, Haven Moses, Randy Gradishar, Karl Mecklenburg, Gary Zimmerman and Terrell Davis were present at the event to welcome Sharpe into the select group.

Sharpe's close personal friend, Rod Smith, was in attendance, as were three current members of the Broncos coaching staff. Assistant linebackers coach Keith Burns -- a former teammate of Sharpe's -- offensive line coach Rick Dennison and running backs coach Bobby Turner were all on hand for the evening dinner and presentation.

From start to finish, Friday's night's event was filled with class.

After a highlight video displaying key moments from Sharpe's illustrious career aired for the attendees, Broncos President and Chief Executive Officer Pat Bowlen took the podium, praising the accomplishments of Sharpe during his 12-year career with the Broncos.

"Nobody deserves this more than you do," Bowlen said. "You were the real deal and I can't tell you how much I appreciate what you did for the Denver Broncos and my family."

Sharpe took the stage next, quickly recalling his reaction when Bowlen called him in April and informed him he'd been selected to the organization's Ring of Fame.

"When you gave me that call in April, I was quiet on the phone and you said 'this doesn't sound like the Shannon I know;" Sharpe told Bowlen. "It was because I was speechless. Even in my wildest imagination as a little boy in Glennville, Georgia, going to Savannah State, could I imagine that my career would turn out like it has."

In a sincere and gracious tone, Sharpe spoke extensively about how appreciative he was to receive the prestigious recognition. As a player, he said he earned individual validation about his play by being selected to eight Pro Bowls. In terms of overall success at football's highest level, Sharpe said winning three Super Bowls was the "ultimate validation" for his career.

But never had he envisioned being honored after his career on the gridiron was complete, calling his Ring of Fame induction "icing on the cake" after all the Broncos organization has done for him since he was selected by the team in the seventh round of the 1990 NFL Draft.

"This is an unbelievable feeling," Sharpe said before walking off the stage to a standing ovation. "I'm so proud to be a Bronco and this is one of the best moments of my life. Mr. Bowlen, I'll never forget it."

FRIENDS PAY TRIBUTE

Broncos greats came out to recognize Sharpe on Friday night for good reason. Sharpe is credited with revolutionizing the tight end position. When he retired in 2003, he left the game as the NFL's all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns by a tight end.

Well aware of Sharpe's accolades, Gary Zimmerman --- a 2008 inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame -- said he was in attendance on Friday night to recognize Sharpe the person, not just the player.

"Shannon was a loyal teammate, he said. "He came into the locker room and entertained a lot of guys. "The o-line was pretty quiet and tight-lipped and Shannon always broke the ice."

While Sharpe has been well-known for his enthusiastic demeanor over the years, Zimmerman said people sometimes tend to forget how dedicated he was during his playing days.

"I think people don't realize the work ethic that he had," Zimmerman said. "If you'd seen him in the locker room - he had a chiseled body. He lifted weights like a lineman. He was probably one of the strongest guys on the team. And he was a very smart football player -- very bright.

Billy Thompson never played with Sharpe, but got to know him particularly well over the years, as his office at Dove Valley was directly across from the tight ends room. Thompson said the two formed a special bond during that time period and continue to have a strong relationship.

"I love him like a brother and he deserves this award," Thompson said.

True to their tight-knit relationship, Thompson and Sharpe both poked fun at each other on Friday night. Thompson said he has told Sharpe on numerous occasions that "if he was playing when I played, I would have shut him out."

Conversely, Sharpe had a message for Thompson, too.

"Billy Thompson, I just want you to know -- if you had played against me, there would be 21 members in the Ring of Fame," Sharpe joked.

RETURNING HOME

Sharpe said he is "anxious" for Sunday's ceremony because how well Broncos fans have treated him over the past two decades.

Due to his current role with CBS' NFL Today, Sharpe hasn't been able to return to Denver as much as he would have liked over the years, as his work schedule conflicts with Broncos games. But every time he does return to the Mile High City, he said he always feels right at home.

"It's always good to come back," Sharpe said. "The fans, they treat you so well when you come back. It's almost like I've never left."

Thompson said Sharpe was so well-liked among Broncos fans that Sunday's halftime atmosphere will without question make for a special moment.

"It will be electric," Thompson said.

Sharpe isn't quite sure what will race through his mind come Sunday, but he knows the occasion will bring a multitude of feelings.

"It's going to be emotional, I know it is," Sharpe said. "My mom is in town. My kids are coming. It's going to be an emotional feeling. How do you put it into words? How do you say thank you?"

Next Game September 20th at home - Cleveland Browns

Well Sunday is only 5 days away or so, and the team is preparing for the Browns to come in to Invesco Mile High and play a football game. How are the Browns fairing so far?

Big plays, turnovers doom Browns

Joshua Cribbs provided the first-half sizzle, sending the Cleveland Browns Stadium crowd into a frenzy.

Adrian Peterson, though, was the silencer.

Peterson and the Vikings were too much for the Browns in the second half of what became a 34-20 Vikings win Sunday. Peterson's highlight reel, 64-yard touchdown capped a run of 24 unanswered second-half points in the season opener for both teams.

The Browns led, 13-10, at halftime thanks in large part to Cribbs' 67-yard punt return touchdown. But two Browns' first-half drives deep into Viking territory ended in field goals, not touchdowns, and the Browns struggled to get anything going offensively in the second half until the game was out of reach.

"You can't just play one half of football," Browns head coach Eric Mangini said. "That's what we did. continue reading this article here

Riding the momentum after last week's dramatic 12-7 win in Cincinnati, the Broncos will host the Cleveland Browns at INVESCO Field at Mile High to open their 2009 home schedule. The Browns are led by Brady Quinn at quarterback and Braylon Edwards at wide receiver, another dangerous combination. Last season, the Broncos won in comeback fashion in Cleveland. If this year's battle is anywhere near as exciting, fans could be in for a treat as the Broncos look to go 2-0.

Well it might be a good game if McDaniels will start his best QB - Tom Brandstater!

Broncos have their own Lottery Scratch Tickets

The Denver Broncos and the Colorado Lottery have announced an instant ticket game that includes a chance to win 2010 season tickets.

The lottery says the game, which started Monday, could generate $1 million for parks, trails and wildlife protection across the state. The team wouldn't reveal how much it could take in through the deal.

The lottery hopes to sell 1.8 million of the $5 tickets. If all tickets are sold, the game will gross $9 million and return $6.3 million in prizes, including top payouts of $100,000. The game also features second-chance drawings for 50 pairs of 2010 season tickets.

The Broncos are the 16th team to take advantage of a new rule approved by NFL owners to allow teams to partner with local lotteries.

Maybe if this works out, they will make one with Josh McDaniels on it and call it "You Pick the Quarterback" or something like that!

McDaniels please get Brandstater out there next week - Please just do it!

Please don't misunderstand me here. I am a Denver Broncos fan and have been for 32 or 33 years. The Broncos are my team, and this blog for the Broncos indicates my interest. So, that being said here goes my rant.

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2009/09/14/sports/nfl190.jpg

Today the Broncos got just plain lucky to win that game. It almost seemed as though God reached down to save the day for them. The pass Orten tossed out there was right in traffic, and didn't have much of a chance, and then it gets deflected and the rest is history.

When Orten gave up the yardage for the sack earlier he gave up their chance to clinch the game with 3 additional field goal points. Then the touchdown the Bengals got would not have mattered. It was Orten who set the team up for failure, and you saw McDaniels yelling at him about it on the sidelines moments later.

My contention is that if Tom Brandstater had been running the offense the lead would have been much better. Denver's defense performed very well against the Bengals all day until that last few minutes of the game, so if the real Quarterback was in the game, you have the win earlier and .......

You wouldn't have had to rely on a Miracle from God!

After Brandstater's performance in the last preseason game, I thought he might have been the starter. Why not McDaniels? What is it about this guy? He just has to have that command doesn't he? Too much pride and not enough thinking is going on here.

The fact is that McDaniels gave up his franchise QB way back in the spring when he tried to orchestrate that 3 way trade and let the details out of the bag so Cutler would find out. I think the little general did it that way on purpose because he already didn't want him on the team after Cutler's reactions to the firing of Shanahan.

We need a new title for the head coach in Denver. We should call him the little general or Napeoleon II. Pretty soon he will show up at the games with his sword don't ya think?

Right there in his lap is his new franchise QB. It is Tom Brandstater. He has the talent, and he is officially number 3 on the list. Whatcha bet Joshy is right now planning on how to get rid of him too! This guy is quite a ride isn't he? How lucky can he be in game one!

I am not the only fan blogger who feels this way, and we need to keep the digital pressure on this guy to do what is best for Denver and not what is best for him personally. Will it really hurt his pride to get the talent out there?

I believe Tom Brandstater is the franchise Quarterback. Write in and use the Twitter and let's tell the general what we think ok?

Broncos Twitter is ..... http://twitter.com/Denver_Broncos

@denver_broncos Hey McDaniels let's get Tom Brandstater out there to start next week

Spectacular Finish - Broncos Win against Bengals

It was an amazing break for the Broncos after the Bengals scored a touchdown and extra point making the score 7 to 6, but even with just a few seconds left, the fates were blowing a wind the Bronco's way.

Having just given up a long, final drive to the Cincinnati Bengals, the Broncos were at their own 13-yard line with 28 seconds remaining in the game. Kyle Orton and his bandaged right index finger lofted a pass near midfield intended for Brandon Marshall but tipped straight up in the air by Bengals cornerback Leon Hall.

Running over from the other side of the field was Stokley, who until that point did not have one reception. Stokley grabbed it in stride and took off down the left sideline, toward the end zone, with Bengals star linebacker Dhani Jones in pursuit. Stokley not only outraced Jones, but he also had the presence of mind to run perpendicular to the end zone along the 1-yard line, to help run out what was left in the clock.

Stokley crossed, and the Broncos had an improbable 12-7 win.

The head-coaching debut of Josh McDaniels was answered with a Hail Mary.

Most credit to the Broncos win goes to their defense. For all but 38 seconds of a 60-minute game, the Broncos' D stopped the passing of Carson Palmer, the receiving of Chad Ochocinco and the rushing of Cedric Benson.

They almost could not overcome their own dreadful offense.

When Orton was sacked away from game-clinching, field-goal position midway through the fourth quarter, Palmer and the Bengals got one more chance to score.

At this point I would have put Tom Brandstater in the game, but not McDaniels, no way jose'

A long, Palmer-to-Ochocinco heavy drive was capped when Benson plowed in from the 1 1/2-inch line, and the Cincinnati Bengals went up 7-6 with 38 seconds remaining.

Then came the deflected, 87-yard touchdown pass to Stokley.

This was the luckiest moment in the game and one the Broncos and the Bengals will not soon forget. The entire stadium went silent and the Bengals hung their heads as Stokley ran into the end zone, only after skirting the goal line while burning up one or two additional seconds from the clock.

Broncos 12 Bengals 7 - Fantastic Finish - Now maybe McDaniels will count his lucky stars and put Tom Brandstater in the game to save the sacks coming next week!

Tomorrow is the big day for Josh McDaniels and the Broncos

Finally this season is getting underway. After their win in the 4th preseason game, the Broncos are feeling a little better about themselves now. The big dilemma is who will be the starter for the Broncos? Will Brandstater get his opener tomorrow?

Here is what I think: McDaniels will play Orten if he is well, only because he has stated that Orten is his starter, and he is a dictator and demands everyone listen to him, and what he says goes, and that is that - period!

So what I think also is that if he is at all smart behind all that commanding pride, he will be ready to put Tom Brandstater in the game when it is evident that Orten cannot take them to the victory.

W - that is what matters to the BUZZ HEAVY Broncos, not controversy.

L - that is what they do not want in any week at all, especially the first game!

DB Dawkins picked as one of Broncos' team captains

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (By PAT GRAHAM (AP))— Brian Dawkins' favorite superhero is Wolverine, the member of the X-Men known for his stamina, agility, superior athleticism and high pain threshold.

You can see why after the 35-year-old safety didn't take long to win over teammates and become a leader for the Denver Broncos. All they have to do is watch him play.

He brings a menacing presence to a Denver defense that has sorely lacked one since linebacker Al Wilson's retirement nearly three years ago.

"He'll talk the talk, and he'll walk the walk," cornerback Champ Bailey said. "I don't like guys who come in and like to talk a lot and don't do everything. He's the opposite of that."

A year ago, Bailey complained that his nasty attitude wasn't rubbing off on his defensive teammates.

Dawkins has been the answer to Bailey's pleas. Now, the Pro Bowl corner has the perfect partner to help him infuse a tenacious disposition.

Dawkins provides a giant dose of toughness and leadership, precisely why the Broncos courted the 14-year veteran to shore up a defense that's been dismal the last two years.

"He makes me want to meet his level of play," defensive back Andre' Goodman said. "If this guy can play like this at his age, why wouldn't you want to follow him?"

Dawkins has become a collector of all things Wolverine, photos and action figures taking up an entire locker stall next to his.

And just like the superhero, Dawkins is an intimidating figure.

"He's been better than I ever expected. He's a true leader," Bailey said.

That's why the team recently anointed him captain, along with Casey Wiegmann, Kyle Orton, Daniel Graham, Wesley Woodyard, Mario Haggan and Bailey.

Dawkins' leadership skills are renown. In Philadelphia, he was the heart and soul of the defense. The Broncos are now hoping that he's the bedrock — even at his age — of their rebuilding efforts as they digest defensive coordinator Mike Nolan's 3-4 scheme.

His fiery attitude has quickly rubbed off — just like Bailey had hoped. If practice loses some of its zest, Dawkins tries to elevate the tempo.

"Every practice is a game day for him," Goodman said.

Not quite.

Game days are special. Game days are when he becomes even more animated, transforming from a mild-mannered family man into a crazed ball of energy when he walks through the tunnel.

Dawkins' pre-game rants fire up a team, his bone-jarring hits during a contest inspire a squad.

That's just his style.

"I play with emotions on my shoulders," said Dawkins, a seven-time Pro Bowler with the Philadelphia Eagles. "I have a great time on the football field ... Whatever energy I have for that day is going to be given completely and fully on the field for my teammates."

Orton is certainly appreciative that he's joined forces with Dawkins and no longer has to face him.

"He's an emotional guy," Orton said. "I've never seen anything like it."

Dawkins hasn't played much in the preseason after breaking his right hand in training camp. He'll wear a cumbersome cast for the season opener Sunday at Cincinnati.

"Doesn't affect me at all," Dawkins said. "I can do everything I need to do."

Including pick off passes?

"My hands are not the best as it is without the club," he said, smiling. "I'll be able to adjust and do what I need to do with the football."

For Dawkins, his decision to leave Philadelphia wasn't reached lightly. It was hard for him to say farewell to a team he helped lead to five NFC championship games and a Super Bowl.

But he liked what he saw in Denver, so he signed in late February.

Then the fireworks went off.

Broncos coach Josh McDaniels found himself embroiled in a clash with Pro Bowler Jay Cutler, leading to a trade that landed the strong-armed quarterback in Chicago.

Later, Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall asked for a trade when the team rejected his request for a new contract. He grew more unhappy throughout training camp and was suspended for the preseason on Aug. 28 for detrimental conduct. He's since returned to the team, and teammates say he has had a better attitude.

This kind of drama wasn't exactly what Dawkins signed on for when he came to town.

Yet his determination hasn't wavered.

"I don't see anything that's going to hinder us or hamper us from going out and playing that type of defense we want to play," Dawkins said. "As far as personalities go, we have a great group of guys."

Broncos Rookie Arrested

Richard Quinn, a rookie tight end for the Denver Broncos, was jailed overnight after an argument with his girlfriend Monday, the Denver Post reported.

According to the report, Quinn was arrested and charged with obstruction of telephone service harassment.

He allegedly took away his girlfriend's cell phone to prevent her from calling the police.

According to the Post, a sheriff's department report said that Quinn's girlfriend told deputies that he grabbed her and shook her to the ground. Quinn admitted taking the phone but told deputies he grabbed his girlfriend only after she hit him in the face. The sheriff's department report said there was no signs of injuries to Quinn's face, according to the Post.

Peter Schaffer, Quinn's attorney and agent, told the newspaper that there were scratches on Quinn's back, and denied wrongdoing by Quinn.

Schaffer called it "an unfortunate personal situation" and told the Post: "When all the facts come out, people will find out Richard's done nothing wrong. Richard's number one concern right now is the welfare of his daughter and to avoid any negative light brought to the Denver Broncos, Richard and his family."

Sources: Marshall, Broncos talking

By Adam Schefter
ESPN

Despite their stormy relationship, the Denver Broncos are now exploring the possibility of giving a contract extension to wide receiver Brandon Marshall, two league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Wednesday.

The potential new deal would put Marshall's salary more in line with some of the game's other highly paid receivers.

Due to the fact he has been unable to get a long-term deal, Marshall has been clinging to the hopes that Denver would deal him. But now, in a new approach, the deal Denver might make is not for Marshall, but rather with Marshall.

The fact that they are even talking is an encouraging sign, sources said, and there is some optimism that a deal could be struck that could keep Marshall in Denver long term.

Vonnie Holliday returning from knee injury - Didn't know about his did you?

Defensive end Vonnie Holliday, who joined the Denver Broncos on Sunday for his first workout with his new team, says an injured knee is what prevented him from signing a contract this spring.

Holliday, who signed with the Broncos on Saturday after Le Kevin Smith missed Denver's final two preseason games with a knee injury, told The Associated Press after practice that he had his right knee surgically repaired by noted sports surgeon Dr. James Andrews in late January.

"A lot of people don't know this, but I had my knee cleaned up and then I got released by Miami and I found myself in free agency: a 12th-year pro, 33 years old and coming off knee surgery," Holliday said. "So, when I met with the Broncos I had a puffy knee."

Denver Broncos May have a New Starter in Tom Brandstater

Who needs Brandon Marshall? Certainly not the Denver Broncos tonight when they played the Arizona Cardinals. Whooped up good, and guess what?

Tom Brandstater was the QB for most of the game!

[About Tom]

They looked good in this game, and I admit the Cards are not the best team out there, but these guys needed this win and really, they executed great all night. A few small things went wrong, but nothing worth mentioning here.

Defense looked good forcing 4 turnovers, and Matt Prater connected 4 times through the uprights!

Now maybe McDaniels will see that he didn't lose his only franchise QB when he traded Cutler. He gained one, namely Tom Brandstater. He is a rookie man, and he looks very promising. I actually believed back when he started with the Broncos that he would be the starter.

Of course, McDaniels makes me wrong on all these guesses every time, but maybe now he will chart a slightly different course. With all his play variations, Tom is just fine. This could be the start of something truly great for Denver and the Broncos!

Tom Brandstater will now be the Denver Broncos QB

Just as I predicted, and perhaps for the best overall. Circumstances sometimes arise where bad decisions have been made, to kind of "correct the situation" for big shots who are wrong

Brandstater shifts to driver's seat

Denver Post - Mike Klis - ‎Sep 2, 2009‎

What about those Broncos huh?

New injuries plague the Broncos, just in the pre-season. What a bad situation for the new head coach. With 2 QBs out, there is one remaining option that he really should use, but somehow I am almost afraid to mention this idea on the blog because every time I toss out an idea on this blog, McDaniels does the opposite. What about Tom Brandstater?

Here are some excerpts from the media meet with Josh McDaniels Tuesday:

On if QB Kyle Orton will be ready for the regular season opener at Cincinnati
"I don't know that. I am hopeful we will have all of our players ready to go on opening day. Again, the timetable for that, I would be totally guessing and (would be) probably wrong if I started guessing about that kind of stuff right now."

On QB Tom Brandstater's performance at practice today
"Tom did well. He is getting better every day. He is a mature kid. He has really picked up some of the things that sometimes take quarterbacks longer to do: run the huddle, get the formations lined up and all that kind of stuff. It seems to have been an easy transition for him to do that. Now, it comes down to playing and throwing and being accurate. He had a really nice red-area period against the defense today, where he completed, I think, 9-out-of-10. He is getting better every day and that is what we like to see out of our young guys."

I think he is going to have to use Tom Brandstater

What choice will he have? Tom can do it, and I predict he will be a franchise QB in the coming months and years.

Mike Rice says in his blog:
Quarterback Kyle Orton hurt his finger against the Bears. Guard Chris Kuper came out of that game with a leg injury. Wide receiver Jabar Gaffney didn’t play against Chicago because of what some reports are calling a thumb injury. Back-up quarterback Chris Simms is trying to recover from an ankle injury. Running back Knowshon Moreno is getting his banged up knee back to full strength.

So why is no one talking about Tom? Adam Schefter talked on KOA the Ride Home with Dave Logan Monday and he mentioned the fact that Tom Brandstater's contribution in Sunday's game was the "bright spot of the game" (paraphrased) or something to that effect. I agree. Tom is the guy, and circumstances may prevail that force McDaniels to use him, even though he is not mentioned.

This new head coach is some kind of enigma isn't he? By the way, I predicted on this blog that Jay Cutler and the Bears would win that game, and I did that way back in the spring. I am too lazy to look for it, but I was very critical of the things the new head coach did. What else is he going to do if the other QBs are broken? Will he rent a QB instead of using Tom?

Broncos are Trimming the Roster

The Broncos on Tuesday released four players, reducing the size of their roster to the NFL-mandated maximum of 75 players.

Punter Britton Colquitt, wide receiver C.J. Jones, tight end Jeb Putzier and center Blake Schlueter were released by the club.

After a standout career at the University of Tennessee, Colquitt joined the Broncos as a college free agent on Apr. 27. During three preseason games with the club, Colquitt notched six punts, averaging 41.0 yards per attempt. The Knoxville, Tenn. native also kicked a 39-yard field goal in the team's second preseason game against the Seahawks at Quest Field in Seattle.

The Broncos claimed Jones off waivers from Kansas City on June 23. The third-year player spent time on Cleveland's active roster in 2003 and appeared in New England's season opener in 2008.

An eight year NFL veteran, Putzier recorded four receptions for 29 yards this preseason, also tallying a touchdown reception in the club's exhibition opener at San Francisco. Putzier spent his first four seasons at the pro level with Denver before rejoining the team in December.

After earning All-Mountain West Conference recognition during each of this three seasons as a starter for Texas Christian University, Schlueter was selected by the Broncos in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft. The 225th overall pick in April's draft, Schlueter saw action in the team's second preseason game at Seattle.
